That sort of happened in my family. My ggg granddad - James Collyer - was a market gardener in London. He moved to Ramsgate & was a Licensed Victualler in 2 pubs that are still in use today. His 2nd son (my gg granddad) George was a mason's labourer but HIS son Charlie (my great granddad) was a gardener. He worked for the borough council & I have a fab sepia picture of him & his trusty lawn mower - a horse drawn one - in one of the local parks. Charlie's 3rd son - & first surviving child - my granddad Fred, was the Corporation Gardener before & after WW2. (He was in the RAF during the war.) He looked after & planted all the flower beds along the whole length of the sea front & also looked after the same parks that his Dad had. I have a black & white piccy of my Granddad hoe-ing away in a flower bed & many memories of when I was a little girl, walking along the prom with my Mum & seeing my granddad beavering away amongst the daffodils, marigolds & roses. Way back in the 1880's I was researching Ron's family as well as mine, his father's mother was a Clout from Brighton area, well I found hundreds and I mean hundreds in the Kent area not anything at the time to link them to the Brighton area, think most of them went down under to OZ and NZ, mostly changing the name to various missspellings of the name. Stan in Calgary Alberta told me that his Grandfather changed Clout to Clute because people were laughing at the original name when he emigrated with his family in the early 1900's. The Ozzie Clans done a lot of research also I passed on a lot that I had, to Pat in NZ, just before I came over to Canada almost 18 years ago to help Bhaylon when Gavin was 'due', Pat came to UK for a holiday, so we met up twice, once in London and once in Birmingham, then I was off to Canada. When Pat went back to NZ there was a big package from Stan, she then after looking at his work let him know I was in Canada and that Ron was closer to him than she was although they are all 3rd cousins. He sent me the same paper work, there were loads of family trees on A2 pages all linked into the Clout they were descended from. Oldest Clout, William had to be born pre 1530, his dau married 1563 [3rd child] giving her a low age to marry of 13 and 3 births and William marrying at 16, think that good to work on further, must check with Stan have checked with him lately on our family trees. William was buried 1562. Some of the surnames coming down into Ron's line are DENYSE/DENNIS pre 1670, BANKS pre 1650 POWEL{L} pre1710, RIM{M}INGTON pre 1705, SCOTT pre 1722 WENBOURNE/WIMBORNE pre 1696, Those were all in Kent, mainly the Hunton and Brenchley area. Other surnames HEDGER .. WOOL{L}DRIDGE .. SMART .. WELLS .. Daniel Wells married Winnifred Wells, his twin brothers Mark and Matthew married two of her sisters Ruth and Jane. Daniel had a another set of twins Isaac and Ruth, in all George Clout and Phoebe [Smart] had 16 children Mt favourite Clout couple are Thomas and Gift [nee Powell] when she died their marriage [not the longest] was almost 28 years and I think her husband and family must have loved her, as all her surviving children were named around the grave, Hope this hasn't been too long winded, is this the sort of thing you meant Sue when you suggested a Surname Topic ??? Reminding myself that I oughta get back into more family history work. Sports .... Well --- I'm not at all keen on a discussion on "who's team is best" - or didn't they do well" .. - But - I'm not against talking about the "history" of sport - or - whether places & people "benefit" or "disbenefit" from sports ... For instance - when Torville & Dean won all the medals they did - including the 1984 World - Nottingham benefited from their performances ... People became more aware of Nottingham - almost as much as they do when you mention "Robin Hood" ... :-) .... Tourism - based around them - brought money to the City ... But - they got a grant from the Local Authority - and there were people around at the time - who thought they shouldn't have gotten the money from the rate-payers' ... Sue .... or Cricket, or Snooker or Polo, or Darts... In fact, no sports at all - please! Would "This week's shopping expedition" be suitable? - the problems it entailed - the traffic, stock shortages, weird offers, shop assistants (good and bad)... I was only kidding anyway Marlene. But as you've asked the question I can tell you that when I have to pick numbers for anything like that, I usually use family birthdays. The two numbers that always down first are 8 & 13. Back in the days that I did the football pools I also picked same initials teams. The one thing I would never do was put Wolves down to draw even if they were in one of those combinations of numbers 'cos I always expected them to win. In my Jarrett family Blacksmiths seem to prevail. I can trace the profession back to three brothers in the Limpsfield/Oxted part of Surrey: John J (1794) Robert (1797) and Stephen (1807). Seeing as they were all blacksmiths it's probably not a stretch to assume that their father was -- but no proof as yet. Stephen had a son who carried on the business, but it was John who really boosted the numbers -- SIX of his sons went on to become blacksmiths in Limpsfield, Oxted, Caterham, Westerham, Merle Common and Titsey! Arthur (the middle son) had a son Alfred Amos (my great grandfather) who carried on the tradition. Many others were whitesmiths, iron mongers and engine fitters. What's *really* interesting is that just recently I have been contacted by someone who is living in the cottage Alfred Amos and family used to live in, and I was able to supply old photos of the place as it was then. Coincidentally, I had mentioned that our Jarrett family were connected at one point to another old area family -- the Tidy's. The strange part is that a Mrs. Tidy (aged 90) now resides next door to him in what used to be The Forge. And sure enough, there's her husband on our family chart!! And it gets even weirder. A week before this fellow contacted me about The Forge and Cherry Cottage, he and his wife had been visiting British Columbia . . . and even Vancouver Island ,with a view to emigrating!!! How's that for coincidental connections? Jennifer Trivvie wrote: > And this one as well ...
