    3. Today is a rather important day in the birth of what was to become the nation of Australia. This date, January 18, 1788, saw the arrival, at Botany Bay of the first British prisoners, euphemistically called settlers, to begin the penal colony in Australia. That first fleet, made up of 11 ships, with a "cargo" of about 780 British convicts, was the vanguard of the penal colony with further fleets arriving in 1790 and 1791. The first free settlers did not arrive in Australia until 1793. The stories of the convicts and the free settlers are written up in many places, and among them are the following from the internet. http://www.cultureandrecreation.gov.au/articles/convicts/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Australia_(1788-1850) http://www.ulladulla.info/historian/ffstory.html http://www.botanybay.nsw.gov.au/city/history.htm http://www.skwirk.com.au/p-c_s-56_u-477_t-1302_c-5006/WA/8/The-First-Fleet-t he-process-of-colonisation/The-arrival-of-the-British/Colonisation-and-confl ict-the-European-arrive/SOSE-History/ http://www.imagesaustralia.com/botanybay.htm Capt'n John

    1. [TRIVVIES] From THE WHITEHAVEN NEWS, SEPT. 19. 1907 A VICAR’S DENUNCIATION OF HARVEST FESTIVAL
    2. Geo.
    3. Transcribed by Ann Selchick. Geo. THE WHITEHAVEN NEWS, SEPT. 19. 1907 A VICAR’S DENUNCIATION OF HARVEST FESTIVALS. _____ The Rev. A. M. MITCHELL, vicar of Burtonwood, Warrington, in his Parish Magazine describes the harvest festivals as a “service of lies.” “The Church” he says, “would have done well if she had omitted this undesirable novelty from her service altogether. No good, but much harm, is done by services which help to bolster up unreality, falsehood and hypocrisy, which create self-satisfaction and which pamper the worldly religious taste of the time. The festival never fails to attract a motley crowd of vulgar, irreligious, godless and profane, who make this their service of lies do duty for years of attendance. It is an annual agricultural show with eyes cast upon possible underlying dollars. Great cauliflower, monster cabbage, champion potato, huge carrot, swollen turnip, are all on view fishing for compliment from Tom, Dick and Harry. Withdraw the show, and the eager mob, the riff raff of Church and Dissent, will vanish. __________

    2. Geo.
    3. Transcribed by Ann Selchick. Geo. THE WHITEHAVEN NEWS, SEPT. 19. 1907 LUCKY PENSIONERS. _____ “A clerk in the War Office retired in 1855, after fifteen years service, and ever since has drawn a pension of £56. Four year later,” says a writer in “Cassell’s Saturday Journal,” “in 1859 he was followed by a confrere who, for five quarters’ work, is still in receipt of a pension. Equally curious an instance is connected with the Foreign Office. After only thirteen years service a gentleman retired on the score of ill health, and now, after an interval of thirty-seven years, he is still drawing £90 per annum. Better still, is the case of a Foreign Office clerk, who retired through impaired health in 1873. Bad as he then was, he continues to receive a pension of £216 13s 4d. __________

    1. [TRIVVIES] From THE WHITEHAVEN NEWS, SEPT. 19. 1907 YOUTH FINED - KESWICK FOR CHIPPING DRUID ST
    2. Geo.
    3. Transcribed by Ann Selchick. Geo. THE WHITEHAVEN NEWS, SEPT. 19. 1907 A YOUTH FINED AT KESWICK FOR CHIPPING A DRUID STONE. ______ The first prosecution in the Lake District under the Ancient Monuments Protection Act took place at Keswick on Saturday. It was authorized by the First Commissioner of Works. The offender, John RAINE, 17, clerk, of Coxhoe, county Durham, did not appear to answer the summons. It was shown that the accused had chipped his surname in six inch letters upon one of the stones in the inner ring of the Druid’s Circle, Keswick., which is a scheduled monument under the Act. The young man had also written in lead pencil upon one of the caution notice boards: “John RAINE, Coxhoe, county Durham, August 17th, 1907.” When approached by a police sergeant at Coxhoe on the 25th August, the defendant admitted the offence and expressed his sorrow; he did not “think there was any harm, the stones being so ancient.” The Bench inflicted a fine of £3, including costs, with orders to reserve the charge which will be incurred in effacing the objectionable lettering. __________
