OK, so this isn't really about the Workhouse per se but it's complementary inasmuch as it deals with the lot of the pauper in early C19 England. Accounts of the Overseer of the Poor [These are amounts paid by the Parish for support of the individual mentioned. They tell a sad story. Geo.]. Sep 16 1815 Wife for care of Thomas Catterwell Girl, 0-4-0 [4 shillings. Geo.]. Oct 12 1815 Wife for care of Catterwell girl, 0-4-0. Oct 19 1816 Thomas Catterwells Girl for shoes, 0-5-0. Oct 20 1820 Thomas Catterwells Girl ill, 0-2-0. Nov 3 1820 Thomas Catterwells Girl ill, 0-1-6. Nov 10 1820 Thomas Catterwells Girl ill all the week, 0-1-6. Nov 20 1820 Thomas Catterwells Girl ill, 0-1-0. Dec 1 1820 Thomas Catterwells Girl ill, 0-1-0. Dec 15 1820 Paid Revt. Samuel Raymond & John Felton for Burial Fees for Girl Catterwell. Dec 22 1820 James Shorters wife for laying forth Girl Catterwell. Elizabeth Catterville (aka Catterwell) was baptised Apr 20 1806 at Belchamp Walter, Essex and buried there on Dec 10 1820 aged 14. In addition to Elizabeth's story there are numerous entries where Thomas received relief payments due to illness and unemployment. Geo.
One or two of Barbara's Catterwell ancestors ended up in the Workhouse on occasions. Workhouse Records and the Records of the Overseer of the Poor, although usually terse, can make fascinating reading and provide a snapshot of the times. For example, to quote just a few of the numerous entries; Workhouse Records Sept-Oct 1819 Boy Catterwell. Work done for Mr. Wright, Easton Hall, 21 days @ 4d, 0-7-0. [that's 7 shillings, the equivalent of 2p per day. Geo.]. Jan 24 1820 Clothing from London. Boy Catterwell 1 Wst. Westcoat. ['Wst.' = Worsted? One presumes this is old donated rather than new clothing. If so it is likely to be very well worn]. Jan 30 1820 1 Coat and Trowsers to Boy Catterwell. [There is further information about this, viz. Cloathing given out by Mr. Robert Raymond, Mens Gray Trowsers, 1 pair Wm. Catterwell. White Westcoats, 1 Wm. Catterwell. Boys Coats, 1 Wm. Catterwell. May 20 1820 Hemp for the Workhouse. Made up for the house. Boy Catterwell, 1 Shirt. 3-yds. [i.e. 3 yards of hemp material was used in the making of a shirt for him. Geo. ]. May 22 1820 Work done for Mrs. Wood in the hop ground. Catterwell, Mrs. Cranfield, Wm. Cranfield. 1 day. Together 0-1-9 [1 shilling and 9 pence, or 21 pence, the equivalent of 10p. Geo.] July 23 1821 Wm. Catterwell sent to the Workhouse. Aug 26 1821 Wm. Catterwell left the Workhouse. Oct 21 1821 Wm. Catterwell Committed to the House of Correction for 3 Callender Months. Nov 5 [or 8] 1821 Wm. Catterwell come into the workhouse from Prison by the order of Mr. Robert Raymond Overseer. There are a number of similar entries where Wm. seems to drift between the Workhouse and the House of Correction. The Parish Overseer Records contain other interesting information. I'll include some snippets in a further post. Geo.

Transcribed by Ann Selchick. Geo. THE WHITEHAVEN NEWS, SEPT. 19. 1907 DEATH OF A WHITEHAVEN WOMAN IN AMERICA. ____ The “Genesco Republic,” Illinois, U. S. A., contains the following: - Mrs. James WARNOCK, after an illness extending over a period of about three years, passed away at her home in Genesco, on Friday, August 30th, 1907. Deceased was a Christian woman, devoted to her home and in the sorrow that came to her in the past few years in the loss of all of her children tried to bear up and withstand the crushing effect of her sorrow. Without avail, however, because of her own feeble condition and now with her passing the husband is left alone. Mr. WARNOCK has made every effort to secure health and contentment for his beloved wife and even arranged and with her went to the native home in England, the journey only bringing temporary relief, however. On August 17, 1901, a son, Hugh, aged nineteen, passed away, and three years later the only surviving child, Lizzie Ann, died at the age of eighteen. With the death now of the mother and wife, Mr. WARNOCK stands alone and in deep sorrow. Deep sympathy is felt for the sorrowing husband and father. Mrs. WARNOCK was born in Whitehaven, England, July 13th, 1864, and died August 30th, 1907, being at the time of her death, 43 years, 1 month and 17 days of age. In the year 1882, January 2nd, she was united in marriage to James WARNOCK, to which union three children were born, a son James dying in infancy, and the other two as above stated. Mr. and Mrs. WARNOCK sailed to America four years after their marriage and have long been residents of Geneseo. In 1889, Mrs. WARNOCK united with the Methodist Church of this city and since has been a faithful member. She is survived besides her husband, by an aged mother and four brothers in England, and a half sister in New Zealand. The funeral service was held from the home at two o’clock on Sunday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. J. L. SHIVELY, pastor of the Methodist Church. The interment was in Oakwood Cemetery. There were present from away at the funeral, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh WARNOCK, Chicago, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph WARNOCK and sons Thomas and William, of Lowell, Ill.; Joseph MORRISON, of Sunny Hill. The deceased was the daughter of the late Mr. M’NAUGHTON, coachbuilder, Scotch Street, band master of the Whitehaven Borough Brass Band. __________
Transcribed by Ann Selchick. Geo. THE WHITEHAVEN NEWS, SEPT. 19. 1907 ATTEMPTING TO COMMIT SUICIDE. _____ At the Whitehaven Police Court, on Monday, before J. Gibson DEES (in the chair), the Mayor J. I. FISHER, W. M’GOWAN and T. MACHELL, Esqs., Jessie WILLIAMSON, 57, widow, was charged with attempting to commit suicide on the 8th inst. Superintendent HOPE explained the prisoner attempted to commit suicide [and threw] herself into the sea, and he was afraid she had done this while under the influence of drink. Catherine TROUSDALE, the wife of John TROUSDALE of Tangier Street, Whitehaven, stated that at about a quarter to nine on Sunday morning, September 8th, she was walking on the North Wall and when she reached the end of the pier she looked round and saw a woman some distance away walking in the same direction. Witness walked round the lighthouse and upon getting to the other side she noticed the woman had disappeared, and she heard a scream. She hurried to the place where she had seen the woman and found a cape lying on the wall at the far steps. She then saw the woman floating in the water and sent her little girl to fetch assistance. Mr. BANKS, who was at the dock gates, came and got the woman out of the water. John BANKS, dock gateman, stated that there would be from 12 to 14 feet of water at the place where he, with assistance, got the woman out, she was unconscious. Sergeant RAE stated that the prisoner had been attended by Dr. DICKSON for four days. Witness charged her, and she replied, “I don’t remember anything about it.” Prisoner had nothing to say in reply to the Bench, and her daughter promised to look after her in the future. The Chairman (to prisoner): We are told this is the result of taking drink, and it is to be hoped it will be a caution to you and that you will leave drink alone in the future. If you will do that and take care of yourself and live quietly with your daughter, you may go, but let this be a caution to you. ______

The last king of Hawaii, David Kalakaua, has been given credit for doing much to restore the traditions of the Hawaiian people. Mythical tales, legends and dances, particularly the hula were restored to their proper place among the Hawaiian people thanks to the work and funding provided by this patron of the arts. The following URLs will give a taste of the Kalakaua as a person: http://www.iolanipalace.org/history/ http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/150/sesq1kalakaua http://www.aloha-hawaii.com/hawaii/king+kalakaua/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Kalakaua http://www.bookrags.com/biography/david-kalakaua/ Capt'n John About King David Kalakaua The Merrie Monarch Festival is dedicated to the memory of King David Kalakaua, known as the Merrie Monarch. King Kalakaua came to the throne of the Hawaiian Kingdom in 1874 and reigned until his death in 1891. He was a patron of the arts, especially music and dance. Kalakaua almost single-handedly restored many of the nearly extinct cultural traditions of the Hawaiian people. These included myths and legends, and the hula, which had been forbidden by the missionaries for over 70 years. Ancient Hawaiians had no written language. Instead, all communication beyond the spoken word took place in the form of chants and the dance called hula. Hula and its accompanying chants recorded Hawaiian genealogy, mythology, and prayers of the heart and mind. The hula was the means by which the culture, history, stories and almost every aspect of Hawaiian life was expressed and passed down through generations. Because the Merrie Monarch Festival has maintained strict standards of authenticity, the true history and culture of the ancient Hawaiian people is being perpetuated. Without such educational and cultural organizations as the Merrie Monarch Festival, the history and unique traditions of the Hawaiian people will be lost forever.

I don't know if I am doing the correct thing here but need help. I have contacted a cousin a number of times but the info I require has not been forthcoming. Possibly I am also tooooo impatient. My grandmother was Florence E Barrett - b 1889 (Sydney) and had a swad of siblings. Married my grandfather in 1916 Ernest Still after her mum Frances K Barrett (nee Forster died). Frances' parents I believe were Frederick and Mary - Frances married Richard Barrett and this where I am stuck as I can not back track anything before my grandmother. Hope this makes sense. Wait till I get onto the Mackintosh side. ROS Make the switch to the world's best email. Get the new Yahoo!7 Mail now. www.yahoo7.com.au/worldsbestemail
