Whenever we had to leave our cat and dog they pined. Even though they were with our Auntie Ann... still they resented our leaving... they take it very personally. When my Buddy Cat got run over and disappeared..until someone found him and took him to the humane society.. where I found him after much searching... I took him straight to the vet where it was discovered he had a broken leg... when I went to visit him at the vets he was in a cage.. he turned his back on me... as if it was all my fault. Took him quite a while to get over it. Animals are funny. All you can do is make a big fuss of him as you are doing Di, and give him time. Is his mouth still bothering him? Glennis Di Di <[email protected]> wrote: Oh Mary I am so sorry to hear this but as you say he was a good age. Since I have come home I am concerned about Scruff......the vet said she ok as I took her there on Tuesday but she is not the old Scruff.....I am thinking maybe me leaving her was not a good thing. She may buck right up....I hope so and i am just giving her all the love she missed when I was away. I know her life was not as good as I give her. My friend told me she had trained Scruff to wait for her food till Jesse the cat had finished his.....I always feed them together....she is too old to be made to do different things. But I must not complain because my friend did move in and look after both of them for 6 weeks. Hugs Di Di [email protected]
sorry to hear about George, Johno. I know just how you feel. My daughter's old dog, Nicky, who has been living with me these past couple of years finally died Jan 15. She was almost 16, a lab/border collie cross, so was a good age. She was almost blind, and deaf and had arthritis, but still enjoyed her quiet life here - that day - when her kidneys failed, and I had to take her down to the vet.... I still miss her and expect her to appear from time to time - though my hands are pretty full these days with a 10 month old West Highland Terrier I was given early in November - Jock is full of energy, and requires many walks no matter how cold it is out there... mary buried in snow Johno wrote: > Hello All > > A sad bloggo this week as we lost our lovely cat George last week to a tumour. Hello Margaret Welcome to the list of which I have been a member for many years. I know you will get on with everyone. They are such a grand bunch of people. Thank you for the nice words about my old friend George. It will be nice to think he is still around if only in spirit. My daughter Cathy is a great believer in the spirit world and often tells me that spirits of humans and animals are all around us. It would be lovely to think of George coming back to see his old haunts now and again. I guess you will know that my age is 90 and early March, Mary and I will be celebrating our 66th year of marriage. Nothing to brag about I know but it is a long time and we have been very happy and still are. I have had a fairly good life - plenty of ups and downs though. I have spent most of my working years as a gardener. I have worked for one or two noted people. That is why I am not a millionaire...<grin>. They kept their millions to themselves. I live with Mary and my daughter Cathy who looks after me in a small village in Bucks. I asked one of my friends where you are. Big Dave told me that you are down in Salisbury. Not an area I have ever visited but Cathy used to live in Winchester many years ago and she always said she loved visiting Salisbury. I wish you well Margaret and hope you enjoy a long time with the list. OK, folks, time for a new Topic of the Month. This time it's Village Life. If anyone has personal experience of living in a small rural community perhaps you might share with us any interesting (or even mundane) local customs, colourful characters, occurrences, anecdotes, memories of special events, local sayings, traditions, etc. What was the village like physically, stone cottages, thatched roofs, a manor house perhaps? What about the church, the shop, the school and the Pub? Was there a forge, a farrier? What flowers, plants and animals/birds were found locally? If you were raised in a village how did you amuse yourself as a child? If you have gathered stories or descriptions of the villages of your ancestors please share those with us too. As villages were the hubs of farming areas feel free to include stories and memories of farms and farming practices. If you have never had experience of living in a rural environment now is your chance to ask about others about it. Geo.
Around Town...Eye Spy: The new father ran out of the delivery room and announced to the rest of his family who were waiting for the news: 'We have twins!' The family is so excited they immediately ask, 'Who do they look like?' The father paused, smiled, and said, 'Each other.' A man goes to the Birth Registrations Office to register his newborn son. The man behind the counter asks the name he wants to give to the boy, and the father replies 'Euro.' The man says that such a name is not acceptable, because it's a currency. The man says: 'What? There weren't any objections when I called my first two sons Mark and Frank.' One day, shortly after the birth of their new baby, the mother had to go out to do some errands, so the proud father stayed home to watch his wonderful new son. Soon after the mother left, the baby started to cry. The father did everything he could think of, but the baby just wouldn't stop crying. Finally, the dad got so worried he decided to take the infant to the doctor. After the doctor listened to all the father had done to get the baby to stop crying, the doctor began to examine the baby's ears, chest and then down to the nappy area. When he opened the nappy, he found was indeed full. Here's the problem,' the doctor explained. 'He just needs to be changed.' The perplexed father remarked, 'But the diaper package specifically says it's good for up to 10 pounds!' THE WORD Absquatulate; to make off, decamp, or abscond. THE NUMBER 47 The number of teeth mosquitos have. THE FACT In Cleveland, Ohio it is illegal to hunt mice without a hunting license. THE QUOTE 'They've finally come up with the perfect office computer. If it makes a mistake, it blames another computer.' -Milton Berle. Cheers. Anne from Cairns, Aus.
Welcome home ..... missed you ... have had quite a week ... one little babe decided it was going to venture pre her or his date so had a stork flying around Bucks for a couple of days then he/she decided to have a change of mind, going to be one of those babies that wants to arrive on another's date, and there's plenty of snail mail cards to send out to family and relatives in February. Marlene .... who's wrist is extra sore tonight had to wait till today to get it sorted out. ````````````````````````````````````````` We're baaack! Drove down to Seattle to catch our flight with Northwest Airlines. Fantastic sunset along the way with the Seattle skyline as a backdrop. The American Border and Security guards were an absolute delight at every stage of our journey -- full of fun and jokes. Looked after Mum a treat. (Sure beats the sober, and downright dour Canadian ones we encountered). Flight was smooth and a strong tail wind got us in an hour earlier than scheduled. Although it was dark when we arrived at Kahului http://www.mapgraphics.com/images/maui.jpg, the warm breezes and tropical smells smoothed our travel weariness away in next to no time. Just a short 50 minute drive to the other side of the island (Kahana) where we grabbed a few groceries for breakfast the next morning, then dumped our bags in our apartment. Slept with the doors open to the sound of waves crashing on the beach. Mmmm. Our apartment was gorgeous -- located on the 12th floor, corner unit overlooking a beautiful sandy beach (see photos) The humpback whales were migrating and every morning as we sat on the lanai drinking our coffee we watched them spouting and cavorting about).(no photos, sorry - can see them here tho' http://sailhawaii.com/whales.html One mother and calf came in really close giving us a great view. There was a great deal of tail slapping or fin slapping ... the noise could be heard for miles and the fountains of white spray were enormous. Often whales would spy hop to see what was going on around them. The weather was lovely ... not too hot ... around 78-80F (25-26 C) during the day, dropping down to mid 60's overnight. Did have a couple of days where the daytime temp only reached 68F (20C) and the locals complained how cold it was <g> Every other day or so there would be rainbows ... small bits, entire arcs ... even double ones (never found that pot of gold or leprechaun - even though one ended on the beach right in front of us). .... to be continued Jennifer __________________________________________________________ Sent from Yahoo! The Greyhound Inn (still there) is a fourteenth century coaching Inn that has been at the heart of the local community since it was first opened. It was the preferred location for the infamous "Hanging Judge", Judge Jeffreys, who used to travel via a secret tunnel from his manor within the village straight to the establishment where he supposedly held court, many attempts to find the tunnel have drawn a blank. Hi Margaret, welcome to the list....... Salisbury .... did a lot of my army training down there ..... beautiful country ...but like you I am also a Londoner..... born at the Mothers Hospital in Hackney but the family mainly came from Edmonton/Enfield area. The trivvie that was asking for the Suffolk phone number is in fact my lovely Mother (Marlene) who lives in Toronto ( I expect to see her over here as soon as she recovers from her quadruple bypass operation and her broken wrist whilst trying to shop backwards). What part of London did you come from? Big Dave, Pam and Nikki Living in South Bucks
Welcome to our List Margaret... these days I seem to trail behind every one ... I remember I used to always be always up in front if not the first with the welcomes. What part of London did you hail from, I hailed from Edmonton London, and many years ago in 1952 left my no 1 son to spend a weekend in Salisbury and Blandford Camp where my husband was finishing his training. Lovely area and Salisbury Cathedral is so beautiful. My no1 son is Big Dave who does the reminders for the B'days and Anniversaries. Our Gen Trivia List and Lizzie and I think Di are a lot older than quite a few of us that used to be on the London List and there have been many more that have come and gone, but since the latter part of 1999 and Spring 2000 we became sort of a great Trivvie Family .... we have lost a few of the oldies to newer lists and family probs. Hope you find us a great group, and stay with us. Marlene -who is also known as Mother Hen & Marmelade who now lives in Oakville, a short walk to Lake Ontario and West of Toronto. [who likes to think she is still sweet 16 but my kids think I'm kindergarten age :-)))))))))))))] __________________________________________________________ Sent from Yahoo!
