    3. Transcribed by Diane Moore. Geo. THE CARLISLE PATRIOT - Saturday, July 22, 1843 ISTHMUS OF PANAMA.--At a meeting of the Academy of Sciences at Paris of Wednesday week, M. AGAGO made a communication of the steps that have been taken towards the great work of the cutting through the Isthmus of Panama, which has been so long talked of, but which many persons have regarded as chimerical. According to this communication, a contract has been entered into by Messrs. BARING and Co., of London, with the Republic of New Grenada, in virtue of which the republic is to cede to them the line required for the projected canal, with 80,000 acres of land on the two banks, and 400,000 acres in the interior of the country. Messrs. BARING and Co. had, it is said, in the first instance, fixed the amount of toll for the navigation of the canal at the exorbitant price of 18f. per ton, but they have reduced it to 8f. The work, upon which from 4,000 to 5,000 men are to be engaged, is to be completed in five years.

    3. Transcribed by Diane Moore. Geo. THE CARLISLE PATRIOT - Saturday, July 22, 1843 AN INSANE MEETING.--At a vestry meeting held at Wakefield last week, for the purpose of passing the constable's accounts, a scene of confusion took place, which ended in Mr. G. CRAVEN moving a resolution, "that this meeting is not in a sufficiently sound state of mind to entertain so important a question as that embraced by my resolution." This resolution was put to a show of hands, and carried almost unanimously. The chairman said that it was time they all went home, as they had voted themselves insane. The meeting then broke up.--Yorkshire paper.

    3. Transcribed by Ann Selchick. Geo. THE NORTHERN NEWS, OCTOBER 9, 1897. A MOTOR CAR SMASHED. ____ A considerable sensation was caused in the town at the week-end by the advent of a motor car, and the feeling was intensified on Sunday morning when it came to grief. A party of four gentlemen arrived from Newcastle on Saturday night about ten o’clock with a motor car driven by steam power. They put up at the Manor House Hotel. About ten o’clock on Sunday morning they set out on their return journey in the presence of a large crowd of interested spectators. Something seemed to be wrong with the brake at the start, and it had evidently got out of order, for on reaching the steep incline at Haltwhistle Bank, the car got beyond control. Two of the party remained upon it and two hung on behind, but they were unable to check the machine, which spun down at a gradually accelerating speed. One of the hangers on got thrown some distance, but luckily escaped with a few scratches. The bridge was passed, but at a sharp turn beyond, an attempt was made to bring the car up by keeping straight ahead instead of negotiating the curve. It ended in disaster. The car leaped the ditch and landed in the hedge, getting pretty well smashed up. To make matters worse the fire was communicated to some of the traveller’s impedimenta, and some overcoats &c. were partly burned. However, the car was at last got straightened up a bit. It was dragged back to the town by two horses, and next day sent on to Newcastle. ______

    3. Transcribed by Ann Selchick. Geo. THE NORTHERN NEWS, OCTOBER 9, 1897. CYCLING CHAT ___ RULES OF THE ROAD. 1. In meeting keep to the left. In overtaking pass on the right; led horses always to be met and passed on the side on which the man in charge is. In meeting or passing restive horses, a slow pace and a few words form the best course. As a sudden dismount generally has a bad effect, a dismount should only be made when requested. 2. If any vehicle or rider is passing, keep a good distance to the left. 3. Before passing foot passengers, rider, or vehicle, notice should be given at sufficient distance, by whistle, bell or otherwise. 4. Never pass between two vehicles or riders when overtaking them, and get a good distance ahead of any vehicle, or rider you pass before riding directly in front. 5. It is illegal to ride on any path specially set aside for foot passengers. 6. A lighted lamp should always be used between sunset and sunrise. 7. Riders should retain full control of their machines when riding down dangerous hills; and a dismount is advisable on approaching any unknown descent which cannot be seen to be clear to the bottom. _____

    3. Hello Gwen We are slowing coming to terms with the loss of George. We have his brother Tiggy and got them both 14 years ago this August. Tiggy is doing well though. We also have another cat called Jack and he is about 6 or 7. He leads Tiggy a dance at times because he is too old to play now. If is fun watching them though. Sorry that you lost your cat. Have you got another one now? The loss of a pet is felt deeply by all the family. We are getting some better weather here now and I believe what the men say about an early spring being on the way. All being well I hope to get out to Watford on Saturday and then hopefully I will get about more often. I hope you are keeping well and wish you only the best. 3. When I first started going up to London I was bothered and eyed up everyone with a haversack but now I find I don't think about it. My friend Pat's son was in the tube and his life was saved because he was sitting on one of the seats at the side of the door on the end of the carriage so was protected from the blast. He works in London and uses the tube still and so does she. I'm more scared driving on the roads than I am in London. Maggie I can understand how some folk can hate London, it can be overpowering, dirty - Very in some places, and Noisy coming from a quiet town or village into noisy tubes and the crowds, BUT for all of that I Love London and there is still so much Beauty there. Regrettably I now only use London to either visit family and friends when able to ...or to do Genealogy. I lived up in Telford around the time of the '74 Birmingham IRA bombing and that didn't stop me still going there to shop and from 1977 living down in Bucks saw me often going through London visiting family, then also Genealogy and a Job, still with the scares of the IRA, and when home I I have still gone to London and sort of circled almost the whole of the Circle line to go where I was heading even with the latest scares ... I am not saying I'm not afraid I'm very wary but then If you want to enjoy the time thats left to you then Life has to go on, and if you want a Life you have to take some challenges and get about ...just maybe not London :-)))) Marlene ... whose life has been full of scary ups and downs and happenings. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ > Oooops no, I didn't mean that but I was thinking of > the times I had been asked up to London and I always > said that was the last place on earth I wanted to > go.
