Married to a Connell and the Irish are just about as bad. Dad's side English. 1. [TRIVVIES] From The Times, 25 Dec 1839 - Carlisle Chartists
    2. Geo.
    3. Transcribed by Petra Mitchinson. Geo. The Times, Wednesday, Dec 25, 1839; pg. 3; Issue 17234; col A EXTRAORDINARY PROCEEDINGS OF THE CARLISLE CHARTISTS. - On Monday evening a public meeting took place in the Assembly-room of the Coffee-house, for the avowed purpose of adopting measures to insure a better observance of the Lord's day. At the hour appointed the room was completely filled, and the persons present belonged, almost without exception, to the Liberal or reform party. The Rev. Mr. FAWCETT proposed that Mr. GRAHAM, of Edmond-castle, should take the chair, which was met by a proposition on the part of the Liberals that the chairman should be Mr. HALL, of the Andrew Marvel Tavern. It is hardly necessary to say that Mr. HALL was appointed by a large majority. Mr. ROGERS addressed the meeting at some length, and urged the necessity of observing the Lord's day. He was followed by Dr. TAYLOR, who replied to his arguments at great length, urging the propriety of immediately granting the people their political "rights." Mr. HARNEY, Mr. CARDO, and Mr. ARMSTRONG also addressed the meeting, and ultimately the following resolutions were adopted: - "1. That all interference with the consciences of men, either by Government or societies, is a crime against the liberty of the subject, and that any attempt to extort funds to support a particular form of worship, or compel the observance of any particular day, is an act of gross tyranny, inconsistent with the principles of Christianity, and which ought to be resisted to the utmost." "2. That this meeting cannot approve of the conduct, or believe in the honesty, of those who have pretended to interest themselves in favour of a strict observance of the Sabbath, for the sake of the poor, because on all occasions they are found opposed to the fondest wishes and best interests of the poor, and have never assisted in any attempt to better their condition, or to regain their lost political rights." - Carlisle Patriot. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Petra

    1. [TRIVVIES] From The Times, 03 Dec 1839 - Rival Railway Lines
    2. Geo.
    3. Transcribed by Petra Mitchinson. Geo. The Times, Tuesday, Dec 03, 1839; pg. 5; Issue 17215; col C THE RIVAL WESTERN LINES TO SCOTLAND. - Considerable discussion is now going on in the north respecting the western lines into Scotland. Two have been proposed from Lancaster to Carlisle, one by way of Whitehaven, over Morecombe-bay, and along the coast to Maryport, to join the Maryport and Carlisle Railway; and the other an inland line from the North Union Railway at Preston, by Penrith to Carlisle. The easier gradients are no doubt by the coast line, but then the embankment for ten miles over Morecombe-bay, and two more over the Duddon Sands, exposed to all the fury of the Western Ocean, is a most formidable undertaking. There appears also to be 90 miles of railway to make instead of 60 by the inland line. On the other hand, the works of the inland line are reported to be heavy, and the country far from easy. It is true there may be only 60 miles to make, but if these 60 are more intractable and expensive than the 90, and more difficult to work after they are made, nothing may be gained by the shorter distance. The whole question of preference will then turn upon the time saved by the 30 miles less the expense of the two lines, and the relative advantages of the intermediate traffic. We confess we have not data enough before us to determine the question of preference, and we are exceedingly unwilling to hazard an imperfect opinion. One of the lines, we presume, will be made, but we think great caution should be exercised in the selection. Very little doubt in our mind exists that whichever line obtains the Parliamentary sanction will command traffic to insure an ample return for the outlay. - Railway Magazine. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Didn't they both get built in the end? Petra

    1. [TRIVVIES] From The Carlisle Patriot - Saturday, July 22, 1843 - Unfortunate Speculation
    2. Geo.
    3. Transcribed by Diane Moore. Geo. THE CARLISLE PATRIOT - Saturday, July 22, 1843 AN UNFORTUNATE SPECULATION.--Some time ago a party of gentlemen, desirous of bringing over from Peru a cargo of live alpacas, gave directions to have an emigrant ship returning from Australia chartered, and accordingly she touched on the western coast of America to receive them on board. To make the most of the trip, a large quantity of guano manure was shipped in the lower hold and between decks. The alpacas were stowed in cribs, purposely erected. The animals had been previously prepared for the voyage, by being kept folded and fed on dried herbage and bulbous roots, such as they would have to eat on their way to Europe. Upwards of 250 were shipped, the largest number ever before attempted, and on the onset of the voyage nearly one-half had young ones, some prematurely; but through the want of ventilation, the effluvia of the guano in the lower hold became so strong and deleterious, that the poor animals died at the rate of 10 and 20 per day, and on the vessel arriving at Liverpool not one had been preserved, notwithstanding the extreme care and anxiety of the captain and his crew. It is understood that the Queen lately purchased a pair of alpacas as an ornament to the grounds at Windsor.
