I have been a subscriber to these lists for a short time, but have seen two topics discussed often, and would like to offer my experience. Latin translations - Since many of the Slavic and Polish records are Catholic church records, they are in Latin. Their is an LDS 'Genealogy Word List' which is very helpful. From the last page of the booklet I took this information "First Edition, July 1990. Series LANG-LAT, No. 1. 34077" (Actually, there is also one for Polish, too, "First Edition, Nov. 1990. Series LANG-POL, No. 1. 34098") Regarding geography (where is the town Piotrokowice?), there is an excellent site which is available online. Visit JewishGen ShtetlSeeker at http://www1.jewishgen.org/locmenu.htm JewishGen has combined three sources, government maps (Geographic Names Database (GNDB)), Encarta 96 map program, and SOUNDEX capabilities, so that you get results based on how names of towns sound, rather than on their spelling. The Jewish word Shtetl means a small village, a community, so their database/capability is called ShtetlSeeker. No, you don't have to be Jewish to use the database.
