Mikula is a Slavic surname derived from the Christian (given) name Mikolaj (Nicholas). It is common in Poland and Czech and Slovak Republic, and is also attested in Balkans. The -ula suffix is quite interesting. This suffix is a linguistic "Carpathianism." Its origin may be Latin or possibily Romanian. A Polish linguist wrote an article on the origin and distribution of Slavic -ula surnames. According to his research, it seems that these surnames are concentrated in the Carpathians and reach as far westward as the Opole area in Silesia. They are most common in the areas of the Carpathians in Silesia, Moravia, Slovakia, and LIttle Poland (Galicia). J. Piszczor
