Good day Constant Christuk, I noticed earlier today your response dated 4 Mar, 1997 to the GEN-SLAVIC mail list, which I received on the soc.genealogy.slavic newsgroup in which you commented > >In a follow up to Anne-Marie=92s recent worthy note in regards to obtain= >ing >Naturalization documents in Massachusetts, the following recently acquir= >ed >information may be useful to others seeking similar data in their own sta= >tes. >The copies originated from the Naturalization Service which was under the >jurisdiction of the U. S. Department of Labor. In this particular case th= >e >years were in the 1920=92s.=20 >The DECLARATION OF INTENTION ( form 2203 ) gives information about the >subject <<snip>> > >The CERTIFICATE OF ARRIVAL- FOR NATURALIZATION PURPOSES has brief information>> <<snip>> >The PETITION FOR NATURALIZATION ( form 2204-L ) offers subject=92s name, = <<snip>> >The OATH OF ALLEGIANCE is mainly a declaration to renounce allegiance to = >the >subject=92s former country, states the subject=92s Certificate of Natural= >ization >No and the date Certificate was issued. >> Apparently, the "Oath of Allegiance" must _not_ have been a standardized form or it changed over the years, as I am in possession of a copy of one dated 1884 from the State of Wisconsin, Monroe Co. CircuitCourt in which the ancestor does...declare on oath,...intention to become a citizen...and renounce...particularly to William Emperer (sic) of Prussia...signed by my ancestor and dated and signed by the Clerk of Circuit Court. That's all there was to the form. As it was issued only a few months after his arrival from Prussia it would not have contained any information about any other certificates and it was not very informative other than a humorous side note. I often refer to some of my ancestors as "peasants", good naturedly of course. On this form the penmanship of my ancestor was clearly very good compared to the clerk of court who couldn't even spell "Emperor" correctly. John Birkholz zlohkrib@aol.com last year I couldn't spell jeanealogist, now I am one! soc.genealogy.german
