Hi - I happened to run across your question about the surname of VONDRA which was answered by someone in Prague. I am of Czech descent (100% actually) and have been interested in genealogy for over ten years. My gr. grandmother's maiden name was Vondra. She was Anna Vondra, born about 1845 in the village of Zvestovice, which is east, southeast of Prague. Her parents were Jan and Magdalena (Marek) Vondra. Anna Vondra married Frantisek Picha (also spelled Pycha) in 1868, and they emigrated to America in 1874, settling in Omaha, NE, where my grandfather (Frank Pycha) was born. She may have had a brother named Jan Vondra who also settled in NE. I have seen a headstone for him in the Bohemian Nat'l. Cemetery in Omaha, and also see his name, along with the birthplace of Zvestovice, in some other booklet. We have not confirmed that this Jan came from the same family, but it seems likely since the village of Zvestovice is very small. Hope this is of some help. Is your name Vondra - or do you have this surname in your family tree? I'd be interested to know if this connects to mine. [email protected]
