First of all, a reminder that GEN-SLAVIC is not a moderated mailing list. The List is meant to be helpful to anyone researching Slavic roots. My Slovak ancestors came to Canada before the 1901 Census of Canada. They and every other Slovak who arrived here before 1901 and who have been entered in the 1901 Census of Canada are entered as "Hungarian". This is only one example of why no one should be discouraged from posting any question to GEN-SLAVIC which has even a remote chance of leading to a start in proving or disproving where their ancestors really originated in Eastern Europe. There are descendants who are second, third or fourth generation North Americans or Australians who in most cases have very little information to work with in the first place. Language differences and the political history have made it even harder. Subscribers to GEN-SLAVIC have been very generous with helping others over the past two years - newbies <and veterans> should feel confident enough on this List to post whatever question will point them to their Slavic past, even the question is about as as naive as it can get.
