I found on Ancestry.com that my great grandfather Michael Wanic appears in the "Index 1890/91 New York Immigrants from Austria, Poland and Galicia" (he arrived on the Spaarndam on Aug. 14, 1890). Before I drive 2+ hours to the Waltham Archives to take a look at the microfilm does anyone know what other info. the Index may contain? I haven't been able to find any other source of info. on him and I'm wondering if the Index may be another dead end. Thanks Kris
Kris, I don't know about this index. However have you checked Ellis Island records? Although Michal's immigration predates the opening of Ellis Island often times we can get an idea of the area of origin for a surname or even find others who were arriving with a previous immigrant as a destination. There is an Antoni WRANIC age 24 arr 1910 whose destination is to bro Michal in "Labrache" Mich. he was listed as coming from Domaraza (manifest actually shows Domaradz), Glaicia wife was Katarzyna Race was Polish. http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/EIDB/ellis.html It appears that many WRANIC were coming from Domardz, which may be one of 2 places that were located in old Galicia, now Poland. There is a third place by this name however it was in Prussia in the 1890s.
