(i.e. Castle Garden and Old Barge office) Online Ellis Island Records (EIR) cover 1892-1924. Castle Garden (Battery NYC) was used as an immigration station 1855-1890. There are no Passenger Lists remaining for Castle Garden. No Ellis Island immigration station existed until 1892. Pending the building of the Ellis Island immigration station the Old Barge Office (in Battery Park) was used as the NYC immigration station (1890-1891) On January 1892 Ellis Island was ready for use and it was used as such until June 15, 1897 when its two wooden buildings burned down. Once again the old Barge Office was used 1897 to 1900. A new Ellis Island station was rebuilt and reopened on December 17, 1900. The records for 1855-1890 were destroyed in the above 1897 fire.
