Is this Polish or Ukranian in origin? Anyone?
There are 62 records for WITAS arr via Ellis Island of those 26 listed Race as Polish 0 Ruthenian (these are typically Byzantine Rite Catholics who came from what is now Western Ukraine) 5 Lithuanian 26 Russian & 26 Austrian (but I would doubt than many of these were in fact ethnic Russians as the Ellis Is transcribers who a few years ago transcribed the data base were very careless when indicating Russian as Race or ethnic group often times they used the term under the Nationality column which meant in those days citizenship) VITYAS has only 1 listing at Ellis Island Race listed as Slovak. Also close sp of VITYAZ also listed as Slovak. But there may be a relationship with Ruthenians as Eastern Slovakia had many Ruthenian people and many Slovaks are also Byzantine Rite Catholics. VITAS is a bit more mixed with 70 arr at Ellis Is 26 Croatian 14 Greek 0 Ruthenian 0 Ukranian 0 Polish 2 Lithuanian http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/EIDB/ellis.html One thing to keep in mind is that Lithuania, Ukraine and Lithuania were at one time part of the same empire.
