    2. Christopher Brennan
    3. Greetings, I am trying to trace my wife's family. Her maternal great grandmother was France Ryngwalska (1871-1928), daughter of Adam Ryngwalski (dates not established). She emigrated to Buffalo, New York (along with her father?), in 1883. I have some questions that I hope can be answered by someone on this list: 1) Is anyone familiar with this name? Is it common to one or two areas in Poland (hoping to narrow down the areas to search)? If so, which ones? 2) Is the ski/ska suffixes correct in the names above (ska for women, ski for men)? Does the form of the name indicate anything about the background of the family (nobility, peasant farmers, etc.)? The men in the family were laborers and factory workers in the US. Does the name provide any clue to their life in Poland? Any help you can provide is appreciated. 3. Greeting, I am researching my wife's family. Her maternal great grandfather was Michal Rzoska (1864-1935), who emigrated to the US (and Buffalo, NY) in 1888. The family oral tradition has it that he left to escape being _regularly_ conscripted into the Prussian Army. I have some questions with which I hope someone can help: 1) Is anyone familiar with this name? Is it likely to be common in one or more areas of Poland (which might help me narrow my search)? If so, which ones? 2) If anyone is familiar with Polish history in this period (ca. 1864-1888), would there have been regular forays from the Prussian/German Army into Poland? If so, why? 3) Would anyone know where I could track down the draft records from the period to confirm or deny the oral tradition? Thanks for your help! Chris Brennan cristoir@rochester.rr.com

    3. For what state? There are some Ohio census records online which can be viewed free. Also many libraries have microfilm census records, such as Western Reserve Historical Museum Library in Cleveland and the library in Ft Wayne IND. HORWATH is a variant of HORVATH one of the most frequent names in Hungary. In Magyar language it translates to..... Croatian. Also HORVAT and HRVAT are found in Croatia. There are several female K. HORWAT and HORWATH found in Ellis Island records from different places in old Habsburg Empire and different Races (aka ethnic groups) The same for Stephan (Stephen, Stipe, Stevo and Istvan) HORWAT/.HORWATH Robert Jerin Croatian Heritage Museum Cleveland Ohio http://www.croatia-in-english.com/rj/ ""Smitty"" <jschmidt@uslink.net> wrote in message news:01a201c36b32$0fdbb660$2801a8c0@rubberspecialties.com... > > Does anyone know of any sites when I can look up census information without having to pay for a subscription? 3. There are 62 records for WITAS arr via Ellis Island of those 26 listed Race as Polish 0 Ruthenian (these are typically Byzantine Rite Catholics who came from what is now Western Ukraine) 5 Lithuanian 26 Russian & 26 Austrian (but I would doubt than many of these were in fact ethnic Russians as the Ellis Is transcribers who a few years ago transcribed the data base were very careless when indicating Russian as Race or ethnic group often times they used the term under the Nationality column which meant in those days citizenship) VITYAS has only 1 listing at Ellis Island Race listed as Slovak. Also close sp of VITYAZ also listed as Slovak. But there may be a relationship with Ruthenians as Eastern Slovakia had many Ruthenian people and many Slovaks are also Byzantine Rite Catholics. VITAS is a bit more mixed with 70 arr at Ellis Is 26 Croatian 14 Greek 0 Ruthenian 0 Ukranian 0 Polish 2 Lithuanian http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/EIDB/ellis.html One thing to keep in mind is that Lithuania, Ukraine and Lithuania were at one time part of the same empire.
