Last name: FELIS Probably Italian, but relatives are from Poland. E-mail any info, please.
The suffix is Slavic (e.g. Mickiewicz), although in the case of borderlands the actual origin of a surname does not necessarily have anything to do with ethnic consciousness. There are numerous Germans with surnames of Slavic origin, for example. J. Piszczor
I can do research on both names. Robicek is not Polish, however. With diacritics, this form would be Czech or Slovak. Also, there is no Robiczek attested today in Poland, although there are some related names. Yes, as you suggest, they could have changed the spelling. I am a linguist and could suggest some related spellings as the original name. For each surname I offer a linguistic analysis and provide information on origin and meaning based on linguistic evidence. I also provide information on frequency and distribution of surname in contemporary Poland. My fee is $29.00 per surname plus SASE. Please provide any alternate spellings you are aware of. My address is: J. Piszczor 4307 Caleta Drive, No. 207 Irving TX 75038 Please e-mail any additional questions.
Hi, Jerry-- No, Genpol is back. You must have been dropped from the subscriber list. Try resubscribing. Also, there is a new Polish list out too. Not as active as genpol, but it's there. I'll see if I can find the instructions for you. I'm trying to find out about my ancestry. My surname is Swetonic, although the Slovak version is probably Svetanick or Svetanik. Any tips on starting this journey would be appreciated. I'm a beginner, and I need help. tims@starwave.com

The aforementioned town is about 5-miles west of the Ukranian and Russian border. Contact the POLISH GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY at paval56@aol.com. they have a very thorough map and data on the info you are seeking. Does that help somewhat ? Chet

I was also told that Starkel, might have been Stailer. I am looking for a Mary (Marie) Starkel b. 1845 in Hussenbach, Russia d. 10/14/1917 in Russia. She was married to Mr. Brill & John Fredrick Scheideman. Had 2 children with Mr. Brill, Louise & George & 6 children with Mr Scheideman, Konrad, Martin, George, another son, who just disappeared, & 2 daughters. 1 daughter married ? Priff, & had at least 1 child named Amalia. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Marilyn
Hello, Scheideman & Priff came from Brunnentral. Konrad Scheideman is my grandfather, his parents were John Fredrick & Mary (Marie) Stailer or Starkel Scheideman. There were 6 children all together, Konrad, Martin, George, & another son. 2 daughters, 1 daughter married ? Priff, had a daughter by the name of Amalia. George was murdered some where in Russia in 1902 or 1903, the unknown son just disappeared, he said he was going to states, but no one knows if he made it or not. The 2 daughters died of consumption. Now Mary (Marie) was married either before or after Scheideman. His name was ? Brill. I was told that Brill came from Germany. Had 2 children, Louise & George. Now Louise & George came to the States at some point, but Mary (Marie) died in Russia in 1917. This is about all I know at this point, I have birth dates, and I know when Matin & Konrad came to the States, but At a lose of what to do now. If you have any ideas on how to proceed, I would appreciate any suggestions you can give me. Thanks, Marilyn
Has anyone heard of this name? I could only find 11 listed in the SSDI CD. I have a Amalia Priff, who was a niece to my grandfather, Konrad Scheideman. She was b. abt 1900 in Russia. Came for a visit in the states in 1910, from a KS census, i found she was listed. Went back to Russia , and now we can't find her. Any ideas? Would really like to find out what happened to her. Thanks, Marilyn

Well, the only thing that occurs to me offhand is to search for his immigration records: his passenger's list and naturalization information. I guess, too, you might check for his marriage license. But I would focus on his immigration records. I have had phenomenal luck with ship's lists. Jill > > > > Hi, my grandfather has passed away. He would not reveal his background to > > relatives. I have difficulty finding Ober-Ravelsbach in Lower Austria on the maps I have. Could anybody suggest how to reach this town? Sincerely, Piotr Rajski
This listserv was active until last fall when messages became sporadic due to computer problems in Warsaw. For the past month I have received no messages at all. Has it died? Will it be or has it been replaced at a new location? Jerry Frank - Calgary, Alberta jfrank@cadvision.com

I am a little vague about the details but I recall that an allied force continued fighting in Russia even after the end of World War I. It was supposed to be secret (possibly the reason for a reluctance to discuss it) and it is posssible that your grandfather was a part of this ecpeditionary force. You would have to do a little historical research on this phase of Russian history for more details. I suspect that many contemporary accounts would show a strong bias toward one side or the other. djm in Ann Arbor
White Russian is now Belarus, I believe at one time part of this area was also Poland. Does this sound right? Carol At 05:51 PM 3/16/97 GMT, you wrote: >Hi, looking for info on my grandfather.
