Marfian Joseph Zintschuk. > Hi! My "Dictionary of Ukrainian Surnames In Canada", F. Bogdan, shows the following variations: Zenchak, Zenchuk, Zinchuk, and (of course) Zhenchuk. The variations may be the result of an attempt to transliterate the name into English. The root 'zhen-', in Ukrainian (and many other Slavic languages) refers to 'woman, wife, female, etc.'. Perhaps 'zin-. or 'zen-' may be corruptions of 'zhen-', or may have no connection. The spelling 'Zintschuk' is not normal English spelling for Ukrainian names transliterated into English directly, but could be for those transliterated into German first, then to English. I hope this helps a little. Bill W
Looking for anyone with this name or someone who may know of this name. Great grandparents were within eyesight of the carpathian mountains. Any information send to kamaksi@epix.net
Has anyone with German-Bohemian ancestors been able to trace them back into Bavaria or elsewhere in Germany? If so, on what records did you depend or how did you make the connections? I have several lines in Southern Bohemia arriving in the 1700's. Have good church records on them but wondering if it is possible to do more. Greenbrown@aol.com
Among the citizens from the Netherlands who set up businesses in Russia before 1917 was a member of the Smelt family. It concerns here a hotel. Is anything known to anybody about a hotel owned by Mr Smelt in St. Petersburg before 1917? Details or a reference welcomed. Jan Hekkenberg E-mail: Jan.Hekkenberg@net.HCC.nl

The "chuk" ending of your grandfather's name is typically Ukrainian. Of course, Ukraine borders Belarus. Is it possible he was Ukrainian? After all, borders changed frequently in this region. My father, for instance, was Ukrainian but at the time he was born, that region of the Ukraine belonged to Poland. It was later reclaimed, and remains today, part of Ukraine. Chris-- I found extensive info about villages in Volhynia, Ukraine, from: http://shangrila.cs.ucdavis.edu:1234/heckman/volhynia/ I don't know whether you can find similar info about other regions or countries by backing up from that URL, but you might give it a try. Also, try: http://ic.net/~ggressa/ukr.html/ Good luck > Now that I've found my ancestral townnames, I've gone back through my > notes and found a list with corresponding townnames. > Unfortunately, I didn't write down the web site where the original list > is. This family has been in that area for a very long time, I don't have any other info on them but there is a Westmoreland County Historical Society that would have the info. on them. .
