Cervenka (with hacek over c) is a perfectly common Czech and Moravian surname. I am not aware of ethnic Ukrainians with this surname. J.Piszczor

As far as records, there are several approaches. You could get the passenger manifests from the National Archives in DC or a regional center (see their site on the net for more info)as those usually state the ancestral villages. If you know these already, contact your local family history center run by the Mormons (no they don't proselytize at the FHCs) and they can order microfiche tapes of records from those locales if they have been microfiched. The Polish Genealogical Society of America also has a great web site with lots of info. Just use your browser to look for these sites. Your local library probably has some books on how to start the search. Good luck! Regards, Bonnie Cieslukowski Weissman

Perhaps this is true on the ecclesial level. But when I examined the Czech and Slovak name-day calendars, I found them celebrating a given saint on completely different dates. How could this be if the saint's days don't vary from country to country? I wish I had those two calendars at my fingertips so I could cite a specific example, but unfortunately I don't. But anyone who gets his hands on the two calendars will readily see what I am pointing out. Saint XYZ on the Czech calendar his his/her feast in March, and the very same Saint on the Slovak calendar is celebrated in August or November, for example. This is what I find puzzling. Can anyone explain it? > > > > -- Gary N. Deckant bs039@yfn.ysu.edu Youngstown, Ohio

They are now starting to post to genealogy newslists under the guise of creating international harmony. After checking out the above website I noticed they did a pretty good job of maligning the Scriptures and interweaving them with other pagan philosophies with all the fingers of each religion/cult pointing to their god as the one and only. Is cult-spamming allowed on this website? d mcleod
Researching MOLACEK family. My g grandfather Anton MOLACEK was born in Prague,Czechoslovakia. 15 Jan 1852. He married Marie Kathryn Vavra b.7Mar1854 in Czechoslovakia. They immigrated to the USA and settled in Schuyler, Colfax Co., Nebraska, for a time where my grandfather, also Anton MOLACEK,and his 12 siblings were born. The family later migrated to Minnesota.
>> Hello, >> I was was wondering if there is an e-mailable list of Slovak or >> Slovak/Czech names days. >> Uga > The name-day calendar DOES vary from country to country. I once saw a list of Czech name-days and Slovak name-days side-by-side, and very few days were the same saint's name for both nations. I never checked it out extensively, but I would venture that there are variations in the calendar in other countries too, as well as Catholic vs. Orthodox differences. And it wasn't simply a case of various spellings of the same given-name, but a case of completely different names on the same day for different countries. -- Gary N. My maiden name is Cervenka. My grandfather came from Zlin in what is now the Czech Republic. I have copies of documents which show my ancestors were in Moravia there back into the late 1700s (at least). Some of the spellings include Cervinky. The surname is usually pronounced Chervenka. Females would be known as Chervenkova. There is a town in the area of the Czech and Slovak republics called Cervenka. My father had the notion that the family originated somewhere east into the former Soviet Union. Some cousins even moved to Kazakstan during Stalin's time. But long before they were in the Czech region, they were supposedly from the Ukraine. I don't know where they lived before the late 1700s, but would like to find out if there is a way to look up Church records or census records for the Ukraine. My line is Christine Cervenka/Ray/Jan/Josef/Josef/Jana. Thanks, Chris Cervenka Finney CervenFinn@aol.com

May I suggesty contacting the Sarov Press (SAROVPRESS@AOL.COM). They are an Orthodox Supply Company and can order you a calendar which lists all the Saints. They also have the Calendar on floppies for Macintoch. ________ It is possible to find a middle word that between two views will signify both. But a middle view between to opposite views concerning the same thing is impossible....There is no room for compromise in matters of the Orthodox Faith. ---St. Mark of Ephesus
