This aggravating type of post comes from outside GEN-SLAVIC, anyone can post to newsgroups, but you have to subscribe to receive GEN-SLAVIC mail. GEN-SLAVIC/soc.genealogy.slavic subscribers are most exemplary in their postings, a really great group doing serious genealogy. In my opinion, moderation would be out of place. Having said this, moderating GEN-SLAVIC would have no effect on junk mail coming in from outside, except to satisfy pranksters that their posts are actually noticed. I know this might not seem like very much of a solution, but the best way to deal with the junk mail is to ignore it. Rest assured if anyone were to subscribe and then post pornography, I would not hesitate to delete the name from the list, with a very good paper trail to justify my action. I agree, I am disgusted by this blatant solicitation of pornography. However, I am also concerned that none of us has the time nor the inclination to act as moderator/censor to filter out this type of slime. I would prefer that we continue as a modest sized, unmoderated group. We do not have to follow the links of these sub-human smut peddlers, nor the other techno-merchandisers who occasionally annoy us with their offerings. Just my two cents worth. Thanks Dan. My grandparents were married in what may be one of the churches you listed. The marriage certificate is in Polish and there is a color drawing of the church, complete with a horse drawn carriage passing in front. It was found in the attic of their home this past summer. They were married in 1915. Thanks again, Dennise
There is enough garbage out there, I didn't subscribe to this listing for that reason. If I want garbage I'll go to the dump!! Dan

For years I assumed that my Grandfather was born in Poland.. I even found another CHUDERSKI currently living in Poland. As I began to dig I found out some things that have really confused me and has brought me to a complete stop. 1. My Grandfather was born in Lwow, Poland ..Jan. 30, 1886, Now I find out... Lwow was a part of the "Russian Partition" , is now called Lviv and is located in the Ukraine. 2. Digging I found out that Ch in Polish is pronounced as an H... now I understand that my Grandfather spoke English when he came to this country... and since I cannot find any reference to CHUDERSKI... I ask myself if I should look for HUDERSKI or some such spelling? IF there is anyone out there who can shed some light on my confusion....PLEASE help. Thomas Chuderski OR is it Huderski? :) Grandfather was Jaroslaw Ignacy Chuderski b. 1/30/1886 Lwow Poland d. Brooklyn NY date: approx 1972 Married Sabina ? Paszkiewicz 2/14/1909 Probably in either PA, NJ, or NY Sabina Paszkiewicz b. Sunoco(?) Poland 8/8/1885.d. Brookly NY date: 24 June, 1974 Mother was Eleanora Dumbrowska, Father was Emil Paszkiewicz.

Can anyone explain it? >Gary N. Deckant >bs039@yfn.ysu.edu >Youngstown, Ohio Perhaps your words "on the ecclesial level" provide the key to this question. In the Roman Catholic Church, the central authority is responsible for all "official" saint's days. In othe rwords, there are "official saints' days" and then there are "names days" which are more traditional than official. After the Second Vatican Council, the church revised its calendar of saints days and moved many of them, especially the older, lesser-known ones -- thus shifting emphasis to the more modern saints. However the tradition of names days was too well established to be changed, many people and even churches continue to celebrate their names days on the traditional dates, even though the "official" mass of that day is for an entirely different saint. The Vatican does permit such substitutions, with certain limitations. One example is the feast of SS. Cyril and Methodius, who are, by tradition, considered to have brought Christianity to the eastern Slavic countries, and are co-patrons of Slovakia. Their feast was transferred from July 7 to Feb. 14 (formerly Valentine's Day -- St./Mr. Valentine was officially "de-emphasized"). I believe the old date is still observed in Slovakia while the new date is observed almost everywhere else. Joe
I am getting very tired of these unsolicited emails we've been getting on genslav lately too. I believe this is an unmoderated list, so I realize that there is not external control over the contents of our messages. Maybe it's time we install a moderater? I have been deleting these messages as soon as they arrive, but an invitation to view pornography is a pretty upsetting thing to show up in our boxes.
