The German Kaiser in Wien (Vienna) also was King of Boehmen (Bohemia) until 1806, when Napoleon abolished the title of German Kaiser and dissolved the German Empire. I am trying to trace any living descendants of Thomas Capek, 1861-1950, Czech-American attorney, banker and historian of his people: (1) Capek s obituary in the New York Times (March 29, 1950, p. 29) states he is survived by his wife Anna, son Thomas Jr., and granddaughter Ludmila. (2) Anna Capek s obituary in the New York Times (August 11, 1956, p. 13) states she is survived by her sister Clara Winlow, son Thomas Jr., and granddaughter Ludmila. The obituary gives Clara s surname but not Ludmila s. Might that indicate that Ludmila was not married at the time? In Moje Amerika (Praha: Borovy, 1935), p. 103, Capek writes that Clara, having married Albert E. Winlow, an Englishman from Canada, devoted herself to journalism and writing. For the well-known children s series Our Little Cousins, she wrote a series of books (Our Little Bohemian Cousin, Our Little Serbian Cousin, [etc.]). In The Cechs (Bohemians) in America (Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1920), p. 64, Capek identifies her as Dr. Clara V. Winlow, social worker, writer, Los Angeles, California. (3) Thomas Capek Jr. is last listed in the Martindale Hubbell Law Directory in 1960. The entry states he was born in 1895, graduated from Columbia University, and was admitted to the New York bar in 1924. He was not a member of any law firm but instead had his own office on Broadway. He is the author of Origins of the Czechoslovak State (New York: Revell Press, 1926). In Nase Amerika (V Praze, 1926), p. 331, Capek writes: Thomas Capek Jr. spent a year in Washington during the war as one of Masaryk s and, when Masaryk returned to the motherland as president, one of Pergler s assistants at the [Czechoslovak] legation. (4) I consulted the New York Times Obituaries Index, which we have to 1978, and all the annual New York Times Indexes since 1978 but found no obituary for Thomas Capek Jr. I will be most grateful for any help you may be able to provide. Actually, Lwow was part of the Austrian partition -- in the late 1700s it was in the area taken by Austria when Austria, Prussia and Russia carved up Poland among them. After World War I it was again in the newly reconstituted Poland; then after World War II it was in the Soviet Union's Ukrainian republic. Today it's in the independent nation of Ukraine. Yes, it is now called Lviv, but then it has *always been called Lviv by the Ukrainians who inhabit that area (Lwow is the Polish name for it). Now that it's in Ukraine, the Ukrainian name is used. Chuderski is probably right, at least originally, coming from the root chudy and the extended form chuder-, meaning lean, thin, frail. (On the other hand, over time surnames do change and you can't rule out its becoming Huderski at some point.) My GGrandparent's names were Prokopiy Merkuriyevich Kozubchik and Melania Danilivna Kozubchik. Now Would Prokopiy's father be Merkuriye Kozubchik and could Danilivna in Melania's name be her maiden name? Has anyone heard of this name? I could only find 11 listed in the SSDI CD. I have a Amalia Priff, who was a niece to my grandfather. She was b. abt 1900 in Russia to ? Priff & ? Scheideman. Came for a visit to the states in 1910, from a KS census, I found. Went back to Russia , and now we can't find her. Any ideas? The name Priff at one time was spelled Prift, and the name is from Greece. There is only 6 listings of the name in the US, I have talked with one of them, & recieved this little bit of information. Does anyone of any ideas where to look now ? Would really like to find out what happened to her. Marilyn
