    1. Re: Are U.S. birth certificates useful for genealogy?
    2. Patricia Bowen
    3. Hi Thomas, I must say I had quite a bit of good luck in researching in PA. I only knew my grandfather name and the approx.date of when he died. My grandfather I knew was born in Poland, but I also wanted to know when my grandparents got married. He died when my father was 2, so little was known. I wrote one general letter and sent it out to the Register of wills and clerk of orphans courts in all the counties. Don't waste time with phone calls, one call told me they had no record, but by mistake I sent a letter to the Somerset County Court. I couldn't believe it when a letter came back and told me that they had it. I was so happy! I also sent letters to the historical & genealogical soc. and they found the death cert. for me. ST John Cantius was another story. I knew my father and his sibblings were baptized there, but after numerous letters ( always sent a check & self addressed envelope) that went unanswered, on trip to PA I decided to stop by there. What a shock on the sect. face when I introduced myself. You would think that she really would have had to dig deep, when in fact, behind her desk she pulled the big ledger out. There was all my info!! I haven't received the birth cert. as of yet, but I found a family in PA, and just recently, one in Poland. Good Luck in your search! This is the name of a county, not a town, in former northeast Hungary; today that area is on the border between northwest Romania and southwest Ukraine. The second looks like the Slavic Kamionka/Kamianka, which means "stone" and is a common placename. There are several in Slovakia and Ukraine; do you have any better idea as to where yours might be? I couldn't find any in former Maramarosh county, but there's one in Ukraine about 30 miles to the north of the old county border--the village of Kamjanka, just southeast of Skole (which is about 20 miles southwest of Stryj). This village was in former Stryj county in Austrian Galicia, but it was close to Maramarosh. Joe armata@vms.cis.pitt.edu

My wife's grandfather, Charles Louis Johnson, was born Falkoping, Sweden, but I have never been able to find out anything about his birth, etc. He came to US about 1893 and stayed. He left brothers and sisters there, but their names were lost after he died. People destroyed his old letters, etc. Regards, JIM

Hi Mark, Check out Mapquest on the net for the towns; you might also check on when and where your ancestors came to the US. Census records from 1920 sometimes have the village of origin,as do death certificates and naturalization papers in many states. Check out some of the general genealogy books from your library (I see you're in NYC, so the NYC Public Library should be helpful); a good one is Angus Baxter's book, In Search of Your European Roots. Check out the sites for the National Archives and also the Federation of Eastern European Family History Societies (FEEFHS) on the net. These places can give you some jump off points in your research, as does this discussion group. Have fun, and let us know what you come up with (you may have some interesting surprises, I know I did)! Regards, Bonnie Cieslukowski Weissman

    1. Re: Are U.S. birth certificates useful for genealogy?
    2. New York State maintains an index of births (also deaths and marriages) on microfiche. Older records (75 years perhaps) are available for the public to browse. Not only don't you need the exact date of birth, you don't even need to know the exact year! I've spent a lot of time browsing these records, very profitably. I'm astonished that Pennsylvania doesn't do the same. Of course once you have the information you still have to order the certificate, but that's a much smaller problem.
