Would appreciate any help. > The "Spis" mentioned in the location is a region in eastern Slovakia, roughly the area around Poprad and Levoca. During the days of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, this was part of Hungary. The word Uhorsko simply means "Hungarian". Nova Ves means "new village", but that alone doesn't help much because there are many places in Slovakia known as Nova Ves. As for Jglo, check the spelling Iglo instead. In certain languages, initial I is often written as J. My own atlas isn't sufficient to pinpoint your town, but perhaps these clues will be of interest to you until a better answer is posted. -- Gary N. Deckant bs039@yfn.ysu.edu Youngstown, Ohio

    2. Jjcrichton
    3. For a book I am writing about family reunions, to be published by Workman Publishing in March, 1998, I am interested in hearing from those who have recently attended or are planning to attend a family reunion. I'd like to learn more about the activities engaged in, the food indulged in, the feelings created by being around family. If you have any questions about my project before proceeding, I'd be happy to answer them. Thanks for your help. Jennifer Crichton jjcrichton@aol.com

    3. GEN-SLAVIC is growing steadily, numbers going up every month. New subscribers might not be aware of a very helpful resource, the FEEFHS, Federation of Eastern European Family History Societies. The URL for the FEEFHS is http://www.feefhs.org Once there you will appreciate the extent of the work done by the editor and webmaster, John Movius. From the Master Index, you will easily find the FAQ for soc.genealogy.slavic by Stephen Kymlicka, founder of soc.genealogy.slavic and co-owner of GEN-SLAVIC. Newbies wondering where to start in Eastern European genealogy would benefit from John A. Hudick's "Slovak and Rusyn Roots: Getting Started". There is a lot of help in this document even if your roots are other than Slovak or Rusyn. The big reminder every month is that GEN-SLAVIC is set for NO MIME messages. (This is true of nearly every genealogy mailing list). The second reminder is the availability of LISTSERV commands by sending an "INFO REFCARD" message to LISTSERV@MAIL.EWORLD.COM. Very handy if you wish to temporarily unsubscribe/keep your mail on hold while on vacation, receive in digest mode, etc. Margaret Sheremata sherema@vax2.concordia.ca GEN-SLAVIC Listowner

I am not certain about Uhorsko, but Nova Ves (formerly named Iglo, hence spelled yglo or jglo and also named Neudorf) in former Spis Co. certainly does exist. It is now called Spisska Nova Ves. It is in Slovakia, not the Czech Republic. It is located about 25 km SSE of Poprad and 50 km WSW of Presov. About 17 km E of Spisske Nova Ves is the town of Spisske Vlachy. This used to be called Szepes Olaszi (also Wallendorf at one time). It is in a mining district Near that town are a few villages with former names like Oms, Olysanka, Olono, Olyse and Odorin. The Hungarian word for lead (the metal) is Olom. The Ol root could well imply lead-mining towns named during the days of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It might be that your grandfather came from this area of Slovakia. You might check the church records in Spisske Vlachy for his birth record and the church records in Spisske Nova Ves for his marriage record. The LDS (mormons) probably have the records on microfilm. In general, Doukhobors do not have a written tradition and therefore do not keep records of births, marriages and deaths. It is very difficult for him to find out anything substantial about his ancestors. Also, his patronym (Demoskoff) is a made up name because an ancestor of his, in Russia, changed it to avoid the draft (it went from being a Russian sounding name to a Polish sounding one, then once in Canada, underwent a couple more changes). Remember, Doukhobors are pacifists. And so, for some people of Russian ancestry the search for their roots is a very difficult one. Yvonne yvonne@uniserve.com
