To Gary Paul Sarsok, with apologies to the list. Gary, your e-mail address continues to bounce back to me as undelivered. I sent a letter to the St. John Cantius church requesting information regarding my grandparents marriage and I enclosed a copy of the marriage certificate. It is entirely in Polish. My question to you is, would you please give a physical description of the church? There is a pen and ink drawing on the marriage certificate of a church, complete with horse drawn carriage and cobblestone/brick streets. The church itself has a large clock/belltower on the right corner (facing the church) and a smaller tower on the left. Two brick buildings flank the church. Even in the photo, it looks old, and the date of their marriage is 1915. Thank you and I hope to be able to mail you directly. Hi, I have been receiving these messages for about three weeks and have seen this subject pop quite a few times. What is the big fascination with this reference? May be it is some thing I should be looking into. I am looking for relations of my gr-grand father John Bobik born 1843, I know he had siblings one brother had children by a Binyo. John was a Hussar/Cossack before he became married to a Jagertchick (Phonetic spelling). Andy and Frank, I have had no messages on Slovak-World since the morning of April 29. We were on vacation and arrived home this week. There were over 600 messages, and I just got through them yesterday, so I didn't notice until I received a note from my cousin. I checked all my deletions, and sure enough, nothing from Slovak-World. > I am looking for as much information as I can find on the > surname KORBILYOVA. I'm told it is non-standard and am > therefore at a bit of a loss. > Patricia Sclater. > firebird@gvi.net Do you know what country the surname is from? There's a word in Slovak -- korbel', (the l' means a soft l, which might be what the ly in the surname represents). It means a goblet or a tankard, that you drink out of. Since the accent is on the first syllable in Slovak, the "e" is unaccented, and it could be that in some dialects it might be pronounced as an "i" (just guessing here). Or it could just be that's how the surname came to be spelled over time. The -ova is a Slavic suffix indicating a married woman (Mr. Korbel', but Mrs. Korbel'ova). Does a Slovak origin fit with what you know? Joe Armata armata@vms.cis.pitt.edu

Jennifer, For my 10 year old son the best family reunion he attended was one held at a small amusement park. Children get bored easily and need something to keep them busy. Maybe even if there was a small creek to swim in. For me the best part was the pile of old family pictures. They were literally in a pile. I don't know how these treasures survived the day! Everyone brought their own lunches. I really didn't like this because I enjoy trying new dishes so much. I would have loved to see some old family recipes. Best of luck on your book.
