    3. Does anyone know whether it was easy or difficult to travel between the 3 partitions of Poland before the nation was re-established in 1918? I'm guessing such travel was discouraged, but perhaps that is due to more recent reports of conditions behind the "Iron Curtain"... -- Thom J. 3. The best place to find city and town locations is http://www.mapquest.com. Use the interactive atlas to find the towns. Berzen, Poland is located in the province of Plock, district of Kutno. You will also find a town of the same name in Belarus and Russia. > Does anyone know the current name or location of this town? 3. You guys are great ! :-) I wanted to thank everyone for the help on the places I asked about. Now..... one more question..... I have found some records at the archives in Litromerice. (1845-1855) However when I try to find records on siblings born later...1860-1890 I draw a blank. I have tried archives of Litromerice and Usti nad Labem. Would the records of the places I asked about be stored in other archives ? I am most curious about "Most". Is there a local or City archives for the town of "Most" ? How about "Teplice" ?? thanks again, Don

    2. Don Hanke
    3. Hi, everyone. I have been rooting through and old family photo album. I have been looking at the backs of the old photo's trying to find clues on where some of the people may have been living. I know that my ancestors came from the Aussig (Usti nad Labem) area of Bohemia. In writing to Archivex and also local Archives (Usti nad Labem and Litromeriz) I have been able to find records on some of them. In looking on the backs there are no names givin (naturally) and nothing written. I do notice what appears to be place names printed on the back by the photographer. Here are some of them.... nearly all of them have Brüx , could this be a place name ? here are others.... Teplitz-Schönaü, Tetschen , Prümyslova vystava v slan , Lobositz . Could Tetschen, be present day Decin ? Would any of these places have records stored in an archive other than Usti nad Labem or Litromeriz ? Any advise....... Don

    3. Try addressing it as you write it. There is usually only one Roman Catholic church in each town. If you are shy, try addressing it to the mayor of the town and he'll deliver it. It would be nice if you had the right zip code, but I'm sure it will be delivered without one taking only a little while longer. John Hudick

    2. Charles Wardell
    3. I am please to inform you that the Index of German/Austrian Nobility can now be searched online: http://www.rootsweb.com/~autwgw/sgi/index.htm The surnames, referenced in more than 100 volumes of "Genealogisches Handbuch des Adels", published by the Starke Verlag, have been indexed using Surname Helper and can now be searched via: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/surhelp-bin/srchsite.pl?site=WGAUTSGI If a match is found, you are shown details (title, year of publication, reference no., availability) of the publication in which the surnames are referenced. Since many surnames are multi-word surnames, a cross-reference list (e.g. BUTTENHEIM see SEEFRIED AUF B.) has also been indexed. I hope that this will be a contribution to your research efforts in German language countries. I plan to extend and improve this draft application in due course and would appreciate your comments and suggestions. -- Charles Wardell A-2073 Schrattenthal 3 Tel/Fax: +43 (2946) 8325 GSM: +43 (664) 307-5815 email: [email protected] (MSN: cwardell COMPUSERVE: wardell) http://www.rootsweb.com/~autwgw/ for Austrian Genealogy and http://www.rootsweb.com/~autwgw/agsfrm.htm for Austria Mailing List

They charge also, but at least you have some recourse if you feel shortchanged. My experience is that the Trebon Archive gave me fair value. I paid ~$300 and have dozens of explicit facts about tow ancestors lines, provided in Czech and about 7-8 pages of data over two separate periods. I understand that now they will translate if you request. To me it has been worth every penny to document vital statistics at the source. Jim in CA

    3. Gloria, You are wise to take a cautious approach to this, and I am hoping that some of the more knowledgeable subscribers can come forward with a few tips on how to evaluate this sort of offer. Even if you did follow through on this, you would want solid information about the sources this person is using - that would be more important to me than contacts with relatives over there, or the offer of messages through anyone's e-mail account. Have you looked for the passenger arrival document yet? Any idea of the port of arrival? There are Indexes you can check for your surname for most of the ports. In New York there is a Soundex from 1902...I would start there. Did you check the 1900 federal census to see if they arrived that early? This census is Soundexed also. Did you look for Naturalization records?...from 1906 you can obtain them from the National Archives in Washington DC. Follow the paper trail back to Europe....and in most cases, you will have to know the village/town in the country they came from to find further records. This information is found in US records, so find all that you can. Hope this helps some, Susanne M. Saether in Florida GFSSusanne and AFSsusanne (AOL Genealogy Forum Staff and ANCESTRY Forum Staff)
