This is probably because at the time of his Baptism there was no Serbian Orthodox church in the area. When my great-grandparents were married, the Serbian Orthodox church had not yet been built so they were married in a Russian Orthodox church. Just thought I'd add that. I invite you to join the Polish Genealogy List [email protected] (to subscribe send "subscribe genpol Your1stname Yoursurname" in the 1st and only line in the "body" of an e-mail letter to [email protected]), there you will be able to ask your question about the distribution in Poland of those 2 Polish surnames that I know you research, GenPol's subscribers have access to statistics saying how many persons with a surname live in Poland, and particularly how many of them in which of the Polish provinces . My Grandpa Slama arrived from Bohemia via Bremen on a North German Lloyd (or Norddeutscher Lloyd) Shipping Lines ship called the Karlsruhe. In searching for arrivals, I downloaded from the online searchable *Morton Allen Directory* at the Cimorelli website a list of all North German Lloyd arrivals to NYC for 1906, and the ship Trave arrived in NYC on March 23, 1906, June 3, 1906, and Oct 22, 1906. You can search for the 1907 arrival dates in NYC at this site: http://www.cimorelli.com/pie/nara/findmrt1.htm This site can connect you to other ways to search... the main page for the Cimorelli site is on Cyndi's list at http://www.CyndisList.com/ships.htm scroll down to SHIPS, PASSENGERS, AND CREW LISTS where you will see CIMO. That's the site. I was actually able, through a lot of websearching, to locate the German Maritime Museum (Deutsches Schiffahrtsmuseum), and through them have obtained a photograph of the Karlsruhe. They may very well have also a photo of the TRAVE, which you can purchase from them. Best of luck. Oh, BTW, my grandpa and his 2 relatives came through Baltimore, MD, rather than NYC. Gary D. Josephdol is now Josipdol and lies in the Kapela region of Croatia, near Ogulin ; this area used to be inhabitated by the krayishnik Serbs, most of them expelled in 1995... Lukovia is not in a serbo-croatian form but that's all I could say. By the way Ksenija Sirota is a 100% genuine Krajisnik-Serb name with Sirota meaning Poor. So far I could appreciate Serbian last names this one is very beautiful. All in all your ancestors were Serbs from Croatia (as Nikola Tesla q.v.) and it means that further research in this country will be quite hard because many Serbian churches and records from past centuries have been burnt by Croatian "non-controled elements" Good Luck ;-)

I can't find either of these locatioan. All my life they went to Serbian Orthodox Church but my dad's baptism record is from Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Loraine Ohio.
