I am researching the ancestors of my mother. The oldest ancestor is one Wenceslaus Benda, who is supposed to be born in or around 1713 in a place that is noted here in Holland as: "Laarsen", but this place does not exist in Europe. We suspect that it might be Laznh in Tsjechik because this is pronounced the same way (about) as Laarsen. He was a mercenary soldier, married here in Holland to Hendrina van Beverdam, and never returned to Czechoslovakia, as far as I know. He died in 1783 in Nijmegen, Holland. *************************************** Huub T.M. ter Beek IJsselstein, the Netherlands [email protected] ICQ nr. 2392869 ************************************** --------------A301F228747A61FECBCADC41 Content-Type: text/x-vcard; charset=us-ascii; name="vcard.vcf" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Description: Card for Huub T.M. ter Beek Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="vcard.vcf" begin: vcard fn: Huub T.M. ter Beek n: ;Huub T.M. ter Beek email;internet: [email protected] x-mozilla-cpt: ;0 x-mozilla-html: FALSE version: 2.1 end: vcard --------------A301F228747A61FECBCADC41--
I am researching my Slovak roots. My great-grandfather, John Martin Savel was my immigrant ancestor to the US. He was born in Hranovnica, Slovakia (present day Slovak Republic) in the parrish(?) land of Spisska Zupa 9 Jan 1878. He married his wife, my great-grandmother, Katerine Szabo in 1904. They, and my great-uncle Martin, traveled to the US and settled in Pennsylvania. My family is uncertain of when this trip occured, they estimate around 1905. Can anyone out there help me with this? If someone can do a look up for me, or tell me where to look it would be MUCH appreciated. Also, my family has done extensive research on the SAVELY surname. Please contact me if you have SAVELY info, perhaps we can help each other. My roots are deep in Hranovnica, Slovakia. I'm also looking for info on the surname SZABO also of Hranovnica. Many thanks, Larry Milligan

I have a question regarding Passenger lists. I have - finally - found the names of the ships that two of my three Bohemian ancestors came over on -- one in 1867 and the other in 1881. One ship was named the Goethe and the other the Lessing. Now I want to confirm with a passenger list plus the port of departure. Who do I write or where do I go to obtain the next step in the link to the "Old World"? Still Searching for the following: Bohac -- Cedar Rapids Iowa @ 1881 Petranek -- Cedar Rapids @ 1867 Hayek (or Hajek) -- Cedar Rapids @ 1867 Soukep Nemecek Svejda Doubravsky ------ All of Cedar Rapids Iowa Thank you Bob White Chula Vista CA
I am trying to locate Opina, Hungary. I always thought my grandfather was from Slovakia but his immigration papers listed his birthplace as Opina, Hungary. He was born in 1879, was this part of Slovakia at that time? I also can't find Ofaln or Miklos Vagas, Austria on a map. My great uncle listed Ofaln as his birthplace, he was born in 1884. Miklos Vagas is listed at the birthplace for his wife, born in 1889. Can anyone help me locate these place on a map? Your help would be greatly apreciated. Regards, Carolyn
I'm looking for my history through these names. Anybody???

> The grandparents of my husband, Richard DZUREC, emigrated to the Cleveland, > Ohio, area around 1910 from the following towns: > > Zelina Bycha (Dzurec) > Livgoin Kuchisdonbev (Prihel) Could the first be Zilina Bycha? That would be two towns, Zilina and Bytca (formerly Bycha), not far from each other in northwest Slovakia. I can't think of anything for Livgoin, but Kuchisdorf is today Vinosady, just east of Pezinok northeast of Bratislava in southwest Slovakia. Joe Armata [email protected]

Cathy At first glance I could not locate those locations on my own map of Slovakia, nor in my Slovak encycloppedia - there is a Bytca in a district (okres) of Zilina - a hachek on the c gives it a similar pronunciation to Bycha - but be careful, my theory may be wrong. Try www.mapquest.com - or if you are near a Barnes & Noble bookstore, you could get a good road map of Slovakia. (They may have to special order). The Slovak language is written with our regular alphabet, but with a few diacritics that are necessary for correct written Slovak - but you ask if the "Slavic" language is written using the Cyrillic alphabet. Some Slavic languages are - I think you may need to clarify the words Slovak and Slavic in your own mind, and an ordinary encyclopedia would do this for you. Good luck Cathy, Margaret Sheremata
How was Szubin, Bydgoszcz, Poland known in 1856? My 2nd great grandfather, Vincenc Scibinski, was born in Szubin, Bydgoszcz, Poland. When documenting events I try to use location names as they were known at the time of the event, then note the current name. Would it be correct to refer to Szubin as Schubin, Posen, Prussia in 1856? Thanks for your help. Chuck Shultz Friendswood, Texas [email protected] http://www.ghg.net/cashultz/family.html
The DZUREC and PRIHEL families emigrated from Slovakia through France. Some of them remain in Le Mans and Paris in the present day. I am trying to locate the towns from which they emigrated in Slovakia. I was given the following spellings for the town: Zelina Bycha (Dzurec) Livgoin Kuchisodbev sp???(Prihel) Is there a website with a map of Slovakia? Also, is the Slavic language written using the Cyrillic alphabet? Thanks so much. Cathy
To clarify a bit, what katydid means is that GEN-SLAVIC is getting messages posted to the Usenet group soc.genealogy.slavic. Most of the soc.genealogy.* groups are gated to/from a mailing list. There is a no spam setting for GEN-SLAVIC (and the other genealogy mailing lists) which is turned on and Rootsweb effectively weeds spam to the mailing lists from the Usenet groups. The odd one does make it through to the list. If you have a post office address for very long, you are going to get junk mail from a variety of sources. And you ignore it.
