    1. SAVELY / SZABO (Pennsylvania)
    2. Larry M Milligan
    3. Need some help here. Both of these surnames came from Slovakia. My great-grandparents were from Hranovnica, Spisska Zupa, Slovakia. My ggrandfather was John Martin SAVEL(Y) b. 1878, and my ggrandmother was Katerine SZABO b. 1885. I'm lead to believe that they came over to the US together abt. 1905. I do know that they settled in Republic, Pennsylvania where the had several children, one being my grandfather. If anyone has either surnames, please contact me. Many thanks, Larry Milligan

Searching ancestors/ancestral roots which familial oral tradition and initial research at FHC indicate were in Hungary. Also interested in the linguistic roots of the name as in "pac", which I understood to mean "to look;to see," but I cannot now substantiate this. All assistance will be appreciated. Thank you. 1. Postings (Hungarian) to GEN-SLAVIC
    2. MARGARET SHEREMATA
    3. First of all, a reminder that GEN-SLAVIC is not a moderated mailing list. The List is meant to be helpful to anyone researching Slavic roots. My Slovak ancestors came to Canada before the 1901 Census of Canada. They and every other Slovak who arrived here before 1901 and who have been entered in the 1901 Census of Canada are entered as "Hungarian". This is only one example of why no one should be discouraged from posting any question to GEN-SLAVIC which has even a remote chance of leading to a start in proving or disproving where their ancestors really originated in Eastern Europe. There are descendants who are second, third or fourth generation North Americans or Australians who in most cases have very little information to work with in the first place. Language differences and the political history have made it even harder. Subscribers to GEN-SLAVIC have been very generous with helping others over the past two years - newbies <and veterans> should feel confident enough on this List to post whatever question will point them to their Slavic past, even the question is about as as naive as it can get. It would be helpful to newbies <and veterans> to periodically explore the web site of the Federation of Eastern European Family Histories at www.feefhs.org Margaret Sheremata GEN-SLAVIC Listowner

(Please) get off your high horse, Keith. If you were born in New York, then you are a Yank. If you're an immigrant, then why the defensive attitude? Who said anything about testing intelligence? We were talking about the average Yank's familiarity with European geography. That's more an issue of interest & attitude than of intelligence.
