What are the indexes? The Indexes are based on an idea by the late Ted Wildy in 1988. They were originally going to be the Marriage Indexes, but due to privacy and such created as the Marriage Witness Indexes. They are transcribed from actual certificates researchers have obtained. 2. What countries are covered? United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand. 3. Are the Indexes Online and Searchable? No, by agreement between the main index holders. 4. How do I place a search in the indexes if I am on the internet? By going to http://mwi.home.ml.org/query.html and filling out the form. 5. What if I am not online? Can I search for an exact marriage? No, the searches are only done by name and/or county, state or province. 8. What do the indexes contain? Every entry contains the names of witness, groom & bride, and the date and place of the marriage as well as the name and address of the genealogist to whose family the couple belong. 9. How big are the indexes? United Kingdom 58,000 entries Australia 20,000 entries New Zealand 20,300 entries 10. Is there anything I need to do when contacting the submitter? When writing to any of the people who submitted these details please say you found their name and address in the Index. 11. Are there any costs for postal searches? Yes, we require a sae from the query sender, and a 50c stamp per enquiry to cover the cost of producing the results of the query.
