The Plaza hotel is next to the FHL and seems to attract a lot of people doing genealogy. One block away is a Marriott, two blocks away is a Shilo Inn, a Wyndham Hotel, and a Doubletree Hotel. These would all be about 1 1/2 - 2 miles from the U of U campus. If you have an extra day, you might want to visit the genealogy library at Everton Publishers, Inc. in Logan, Utah (Publishers of Everton's Genealogical Helper). It is about 80 miles north of SLC.
