When we were in SLC in July, we stayed at the Executive Suites (or a similar name) at 3rd W. and North Temple. It was 59.00 a night for a double, two queen beds. It was okay. There is a Travelodge even closer on N. Temple that is about the same price. That is where I plan to stay the next time. After all, you don't spend much time there anyway. I don't know about public transportation there. The roads are a mess. Don't travel around anymore than you have to. You can probably drive up to the U fairly easily, but you might want to look into finding a route that does not involve a freeway. The freeways and exits are all torn up getting ready for the Olympics. Good luck.
