1. [GEN-ROOTERS-L] Lesson 3
2. Now that we have our genealogy programs set up and all of our known information installed, we will begin to talk about where to look for further information online. There are many excellent beginning lessons online and for how to off line search for ancestors so I am not covering this information. Most of you know the how tos you just need the where's. To those who need how to's I recommend Dear Myrtle at: Welcome to DearMYRTLE's place. She has excellent lessons on beginning, using a FHC and getting organized. We are start covering good locations to search and post our own information to find distant relatives. I have found over 100 cousins that I never knew about since getting online. Some are distant and some are as close as first cousins twice removed. It is amazing what all you find. Remember----POST your surnames wherever possible and keep track of where you post them! Keep track of where you find contact people so you can go back and check for further information if needed. The USGenWeb Project - Home Page There is a listing for each state broken down in to each county to search for information. Some counties have more information than others- some have cemetery info, marriage, death, war rolls, and most have links to other sites pertaining to that county. Excellent site to start at. RootsWeb Surname List I found many of my cousins from this link. Just save this letter and go to a site a day or something if you feel overwhelmed. Be sure to note on some form of research log where you go and what you find. I will start working on less thought of items for next time and post it this next week/weekend. Happy Hunting, Dianne PS-- If you ever have questions or problems please feel free to email me. I am happy to help if I can- I do not know all either but have been online almost two years and snooped a lot. I do the best I can. I do not mind getting Instant messages while I am online. Always have a few minutes to help someone. If there is ever enough interest in getting together in a chat room thru instant messenger, I would be glad to be there too.
