    3. I don't know if this is helpful or redundant --- our page has a section on tracing Mormon pioneers -- you've probably already seen it, but......if not, maybe you'll get lucky. The address is http://www.geocities.com/Vienna/Strasse/7222 --- then go to the cultural and ethnic page............. We were down in Utah at my daughter's wedding, so I missed the original message.....sorry if this is repetitive. 3. Any NYC experts out there? I have been searching for my great-grandparents, William Stewart and Lizzie Robertson in Brooklyn. Long, sad story - the father left the family to find work. The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children removed my grandfather (William Robertson Stewart) and his younger brother (Hector Stewart) from the home. Court records show that William and Lizzie showed up in court, William agreed to pay a certain amount per week to support his children, but disappeared from the picture. Lizzie, unable to care for her 3 sons, allowed the 2 older boys to be placed in the Five Points House of Industry. The youngest, Charles, was too young and sickly and was sent to live with an aunt, a Mrs. Margaret Sweeney. No trace was found of the father, William H Stewart. Lizzie died sometime around Jan 1907. After that time, the 2 older boys were sent west on the orphan trains by the Children's Aid Society. As far as I know, my grandfather never had any contact with baby brother Charles. I vaguely remember him talking about his brother Hector. Although there was no contact from William H, the father, years later my grandfather received a letter from him. It was a heart-breaking letter that had me (a cool, cynical, know-it-all 20-year-old) crying my eyes out. Unfortunately, the letter is long lost. I am desperately searching for William and Lizzie's marriage record. My grandfather, the oldest, was born in Apr 1893. I have to assume that William and Lizzie married about a year before that. Any suggestions would be great - I feel a great deal of love for Lizzie, an unusual closeness. My grandfather cared dearly for his mother and named his only child after her, my mother, Lois Elizabeth. My older daughter, in turn, was named Elizabeth. My younger daughter was born with gorgeous honey gold hair that we feel certain is Lizzie's contribution and reminder. City directories have been searched, death records have been studied, I even had the chance to go through marriage record films in the SLC FHC a few years ago, with no success. Please, give me ideas. I live in Austin, TX, and a trip to NYC is not possible! I love belonging to this mailing list. Everyone is marvelous. I have been on other mailing lists where there is constant nit-picking and meanness (from which I have unsubscribed). Diane Wrightsman

    3. Hi Bonnie When I read your message I felt like I was reading my own story. I am new to internet access and genealogy. I have dabbled in genealogy over the years, but have again gotten more into it. I happend upon a site which listed some of my surnames so I sent out email messages with hopes of hearing from someone. Sure enough the next day I received a message from someone who sent me 5 generations of information! I spent the next week inputting the info into my database and then spent many hours on line trying to make another "hit". Haven't had much success yet, but I'm not giving up. It was so exciting to get this info. But like you 2am is a bit much! HA!HA! Once the "bug" bites it's hard to shake it. Good luck with your search. By the way I'm researching the following surnames: BAIN,GRAY,KANE,SINCLAIR,ANDERSON,HIGGINS,SHEARER,DEUCHART (DUCHARD) all from Scotland. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Anyone out there working on any of these names?? Have a great day everyone! If you can give some idea of location and time period of the desired births, then we might be able to advise on how best to go about getting birth records or birth dates. Keep in mind that birth registration is, for the most part, a late 19th century and 20th century procedure. In a few states and foreign countries they exist from the mid-19th century and some New England towns kept birth registers as early as the 17th century. Some churchs kept infant christening records which often included the child's birthdate in the record and some of these survive from the 15th century. In the US, there is no nationwide standard for birth registration -- each state sets its own procedures and requirements. Some states started requiring birth registration earlier than others. Sometimes there are county, town or city records that pre-date the state records. Records of recent origin (past 70-100 years, depending on the state or country) are considered private by law and public access to the records is limited. Dawna

It all depends on how big the library is and how much drawer space they have. Montreal is small with little drawer space.
