    1. [GEN-ROOTERS-L] ELLIS ISLAND LIST
    2. FROM: KENAPPLEBY@AOL.COM I have just learned that the Church (LDS) now has a CD-ROM listing the immigrants arriving at Ellis Island. It is available from the Church Distribution Center as No. 50176 at a cost of $46.73. Your Bishop may authorize its purchase for the ward library. I am excited about it because through this list I may at last be able to identify the parents of my great- grandfather, John Francis Appleby, who was born on 23 May 1840 of parents just recently arrived from England. Incidentally, does anyone know where the 1954 census of the San Carlos Indian Reservation in Arizona is located? A "less active" member of my ward would like to be able to obtain a copy together with its Constitution and By-Laws w/Enrollment. Thank you! Ken Appleby

    2. Virginia, The meetings that I have attended in the past is usually for members only. Just because sometimes the Doctorine is a little heavy. What I would do is either call SLC and ask or video type it and then do an open house around it. Good Luck, Kris Rowlett, TX

    2. Linda, Through experience we tell our patrons to send an update of their research to Salt Lake City once a year. My assistant Director suggested that we do it on our birthdays' because without our ancesters we wouldn't have a birthday. In many of the new software programs once you send in the first submission the following submission will only do what you have changed. There is a couple of reasons to do this yearly. First and foremost Salt Lake does recieve 1000's of disks each month. They are very careful not to lose any, but it does happen. Second. I know that I do not live where I did 2 years ago let alone 4 years ago and not even close to where I did in 1983. By submitting yearly you updated marriages, deaths, births and any new ancestors that you have found. Also you are pretty much asured that you will be in the updates from SLC. Good Luck, and we appreciate all the hard work that you do at your Regional Family History Center. This could not go forward without you volunteering, every minute is appreciated. Thanks, Kris

    3. I am certainly glad I joined this list. I have not as yet received my AF update and only today received the message telling of the broadcast. I am the director of a very small FHC in the Hill County of Texas. I was thinking of inviting our non-member patrons to attend the broadcast. Is that a good idea or should it be limited to members? 3. Hi, Just getting in on the conversation. I volunteer at a Regional Family History Center and have not been told of the new AF, although I knew one would be coming soon. I just checked last week and I'm still not on there. I sent mine in about 3 years ago, so something must be wrong with my entry. Does anyone know how to find out if there is a reason yours is not appearing? Like maybe confusing dates, etc. How do I find out? We are also getting the satellite broadcast. I also ordered the two new discs and found out today they have been shipped to my address and should be here in a couple of days. Can't wait! The broadcast should be interesting. 2. Diane, Not a clue. I talked with SLC and they won't even tell. They did say that it would be worth our effort to come. I talked with the FHC Directors in Denver and they don't know either. SLC did say that the Priesthood Leaders should also attend. I live out in Rowlett. Thanks for all your hard work. Kris

    3. I'm not sure about marriage records, but one place I have contacted for vital records is the New York City Archives. Unfortunately, both of my encounters with them have left me with a bad taste in my mouth. Must have caught them on a bad day, both times. Have you tried the marriage films from the FHC? Have you searched the films of the yearly NYC directories for the years after 1905? Trying posting NYC queries on the NYC mailing list - pretty busy, with normally quick responses from people on the list. Anyway, good luck - I know how difficult any record in NYC can be when the exact date is not known. 1. Re: [GEN-ROOTERS-L] CD ROM on LDS Emigration
    2. In answer to the question on James Warner, Ann Warner, and Sarah Ann Warner, the CD ROM, "LDS Emigrant Roster and Voyage History" would be a great help. It has over 103,000 entries and nine indexes. If your ancestor was an LDS emigrant between 1840-1869, this database may contain: (1) The name of your ancestor. (2) A history of the voyage. (3) A reference as to where a drawing is available of the ship on which your ancestor sailed. (4) A possible newspaper reference with your ancestor listed. (5) If your ancestor was a Perpetual Emigration Fund emigrant (only a partial listing of the PEF emigrants is available). (6) The exact source where you may find your ancestor listed on the passenger record, and (7) Miscellaneous references. The CD-ROM is formatted with FOLIO by INFOBASES, the same system used by the LDS Collectors LIbrary. Upon registration of your CD, you are also eligible to receive fre items and a discount on a future CD-ROM. It is now in its second printing. More information can be received from Yship@aol.com By the way James Warner, Ann Warner, and Sarah Ann Warner, were on the James Nesmith in 1856 and there is an account of the voyage in this CD ROM. I don't know who the lady is who requested the information but, if somebody knows you might want to pass this info. on to her. Grant Davis

It is no service to enter information that others have no way of knowing was interpretative. If you cannot document your facts leave them blank so that others may know the search is still on. When you get information from others you accept their information and do not question it, usually. There is nothing as frustration as trying to research further information from "facts" that were undocumented, and turn out to be wrong or misleading. How much work will we get done if we always have to question, cleanup, and redo the information we have. Ancestral File is full of mistakes that are there because information that was not vital was assumed and submitted. I call vital information "the information that is needed to clear names for temple work" To submit your names to the temple you need a birth date and the country of the birth and it appears you have that. For me, it was tempting to "Fill in the blanks" when I was new at this, but now I have made a complete 180. If you can document it, record it and the source. If you think it might be or should be, keep it as notes, till the documentation comes to the surface. Family History Work is a labor of love and service that takes us to the temple. Genealogy is the researching of peoples lives and the events of their lives. Family History Work is done to satisfy the prompting of the spirit. Genealogy is done because archives exist and they are unorganized. The Archives are there because the Lord knows how strong the spirit is and how important it is that we go to the temple. Our family members are known to the Lord and if need be, in his time frame the information will come to light, and your assumption might even be right. Till then my advise, for what it's worth, wait for it to get "caught in the web" by letting others know you need it. Jim in Phoenix
