A review of the Welcoming message of the list. PRINT OFF A COPY OF THIS MESSAGE AS IT HAS INSTRUCTIONS ON SUBSCRIBING AND UNSUBSCRIBING TO THE LIST. I am Dianne Morris, Listowner. Welcome to the GEN-ROOTERS mailing list! You are currently subscribed in "mail mode", which means that you will receive every posting made to GEN-ROOTERS as a separate e-mail. The directions on how to change to digest mode are given below. 1. How to unsubscribe. Send a message to GEN-ROOTERS-L-request@rootsweb.com that contains (in the body of the message) the command unsubscribe and no additional text. 2. How to subscribe. Whatever you just did worked, or you'd not be getting this message. But for future reference (for instance, if your subscription is cancelled for whatever reason and you want to resubscribe), just send the command "subscribe" to GEN-ROOTERS-L-request@rootsweb.com. 3. How to change to digest mode (several postings are combined and sent to you together as a single large message). There are two steps. First, send the command "unsubscribe" to GEN-ROOTERS-L-request@rootsweb.com to discontinue mail mode. Second, send the command "subscribe" to GEN-ROOTERS-D-request@rootsweb.com to start receiving digests. 4. How to change to NOMAIL mode. There is no formal NOMAIL mode. All you have to do is follow the directions above and unsubscribe when you want the messages to stop, and then when you want them to start again, simply subscribe again. 5. If you'd like to post a message so everyone on the mailing list receives it, just send it to GEN-ROOTERS-L@rootsweb.com. It will then be sent on to everyone in both mail and digest mode. You don't need to send it explicitly to both. 6. If you have problems with any of this write to me at: azdee@geocities.com We have very few rules. Be polite. Most of us are LDS but not all. I will remove people that send flames (mean letters) and block them from coming back. If you are having a problem with someone let me know and let me handle it please. There are a couple of things you need to do once you get on the list. 1. Write up a query stating what basic surnames, with dates and places listed and post it on the list.It will be posted on to the Surname Index pages for the members. It is located at: http://www.geocities.com/heartland/park/3913/grnames.html 2. State if you are a beginner and will be wanting lessons, assistance with locations to search, or advice on how to find your ancestors. 3. Try to post information on your progress or successes once a month. The list will be more informative if all post at least once a month. More often is nice too but at LEAST once a month. There is a home page for the list. It is at Http://members.aol.com/AZDEE/index.html There is a page for lessons at: http://members.aol.com/AZDEE/lesson.html We are all here to get help doing our research. The list is only as good as the list members make it. I hope you will be a participant and not just a sightseer. This list has been more listing success stories and helpful hints more than the exchange of names. If you post what you wish help on we do try to help. We are not as a rule a high volume list. If you wish a list with mainly genealogy mailings I would suggest ROOTS-L as they are high volume and genealogy postings. Welcome to the List and Good luck on the Quest for your ancestors. Question: We plan on having our meeting, etc. the night of the broadcast (Nov. 8) at the stake center. A neighboring ward has a satellite dish and was wondering if it will be broadcast to wards also? Thanks, Anne

I subscribe to the Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter. The following article was in the latest edition that I just received. IT IS IMPORTANT TO YOUR PRIVACY - READ IT! Jerry The following article is from Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter and is copyright 1998 by Richard W. Eastman and Ancestry, Inc. It is re-published here with the permission of the author. - Genealogy Web Site Sells Your Name and E-mail Address It's a tough world. Lots of businesses sell their customer lists these days. The result is that you get junk mail and marketing phone calls from all sorts of companies trying to sell you something you probably don't want. The newest twist is "spam mail", unwanted e-mails that advertise all sorts of junk. Now a well-known genealogy Web site is contributing to the spam mail that you receive and apparently is profiting from personal information that they obtain from you under the guise of helping you do genealogy research. In fact, the Web site apparently is a "front", as the main purpose seems to be gathering personal information about you and then selling that information. The Family Tree House Web site at http://www.usaafter.com claims that it is "the Association for FamilyTree Enrollment and Registry." The home page says, "This site offers free family tree software and links to key genealogy sites. The software is available on-line. You can build your FamilyTree House in real time, no downloading is required." They also say, "...you can create and register your own on-line FamilyTree. And because it is on-line, you can enlist the help of other family members by giving them your personal access code to allow them to fill in the missing branches--it's a project the whole family can participate in no matter where they live." On another page the site advises, "When requesting information, please make sure you include your name, mailing address and the information you would like." After they collect all the personal information from you and your other family members, the owners of Family Tree House apparently package the information and sell it to other companies that send junk mail or spam e-mails. On a different Web site, the owners of Family Tree House offer "a file of 33,600 last-12-month registrants of the Family Tree House, an association that offers Web site members free software and links to genealogy sites." The file they sell reportedly contains information about each person's date of birth, gender, e-mail address, state and ZIP code. The Web advertisement says that the file contains listings for 33,600 people who have left personal information on the Family Tree House site. As ward family history consultant, the bishop has asked me to help a new convert find her ancestors. Although her parents never joined the church (she just turned 18), her grandmother (also nonmember) has been doing genealogy and has traced the Meeker line back into the 1600's. When checking the IGI, we were astounded that from her great grandfather back, all the temple work has been done (not just once either, but 4 or 5 times!). In trying to explain this to myself, I vaguely remember that there was someone with the last name of Meeker around the time of Joseph Smith. Does anyone out there remember any more than this?? If this was the case, it could explain why there is so much temple work done on the Meeker line. Thanks, Sherrie Wieland
Heidi-thank you. I'll do just that. Linda
When searching in the local FHC I found the following in Anc. File: John Paul b. 1767 VA (AFN:935B-ZD) & wife Martha b. 1772-PA (AFN:935c_OJ) and it shows children Wm Paul (AFN:935C-lP) b. 1799 NC and Presly Paul b. 1801. Obviously someone has researched this family. I BELIEVE Wm. Paul is my ggrandfather who m. Rebecca Bigs in Robeson Co. NC-1829. I've found a John Paul, son of Audley Paul, who had son Wm. in VA-but he was m. to Mary. Where do I go from here? Thanks in advance. Linda
If you go back to the AF, you will be able to find the list of people who submitted the information. I think you get that information by using the F9 key. I have contacted the submitter three times. One's health didn't allow her to do genealogy anymore, one hadn't submitted the information and the third was able to correct a lot of my information and tell me about a family bible from about 1770. Just remember to include a self-addressed, stamped envelop. I was scolded for not doing that. Good luck. ***** Message forwarded from "Sandy Trope" <TropeSJ@ldschurch.org> ***** LDS Church Press Release 28 Oct 98 ELLIS ISLAND TO GET FAMILY HISTORY RESEARCH CENTER Church is Digitizing 17 Million Immigrant Records for the Facility The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is playing a key role in the establishment of a family history research center on New York's Ellis Island, where in two years the public will have automated access to a computerized database containing 17 million U.S. immigration records. At a news conference today on the island, Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation Chairman Emeritus Lee Iacocca announced plans for the American Family Immigration History Center, expected to open in the year 2000. During the past five years, the Church, in cooperation with the foundation and the National Park Service, has spent more than two million volunteer hours digitizing Ellis Island records. To date, some 65 percent of the records have been extracted from microfilmed copies of the original ledgers--passenger records and ships' manifests--which were mostly hand-written, faded and damaged. The original documents were destroyed years ago. The remaining 35 percent of the records will be extracted and digitized by the opening of the center, which will be situated in the Ellis Island Immigration Museum. The center will house state-of-the-art interactive computer technology that will bring family documentation and genealogical exploration to visitors. The Ellis Island records represent some 60 percent of all U.S. immigration records. It is estimated that more than 100 million Americans today can trace their roots to immigrants who passed through Ellis Island between 1892 and 1924. The Family History Department of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is a world leader in genealogical research, with more than 3,200 family history centers worldwide and the world's largest collection of family history records, housed in Salt Lake City. ***** End of forwarded Message ***** -------------------------------------------------------------------- John D. 28 October 1998 To: Dawna Thanks for the info re Ellis Island. Someone else said the same thing. Do you know how to get the records from Castle Garden, Manhattan? Thanks! Ken Appleby - San Diego California
From: Ken Appleby Thanks for the info regarding early immigrants, but I'm really sorry that record at Ellis Island didn't start until 1895. Wow! Do you know of any records beginning in the early 1800's? Thanks! Ken Appleby - San Diego California
tere is usualy a place in the notes to make a statement that the parents were living in a given area at the time of the birth of a child, this info would be of much help in giving info to others. ____ Linda Harris 1872 Regents Park Ct Marietta GA 30062 770 578-0105 Researching in eastern NC and VA and southern PA

I visited Ellis Island this past summer and they were very adamant that there was no master index of immigrants available anywhere. In fact, due to a fire many of the earliest registers have been destroyed (which is why my husband's grandfather immigration record no longer exists). I suspect this CD is a collection of the "roll of honor" -- lists of Ellis Island immigrants who were enrolled by descendants or relatives in return for a contribution made to the restoration project. > through this list I may at last be able to identify the parents of my great- > grandfather, John Francis Appleby, who was born on 23 May 1840 of parents just > recently arrived from England Even if the CDROM did contain a complete list of immigrants through Ellis Island, your ancestors would not be included. Ellis Island did not open as an immigration station until 1892. Certainly, there were millions of immigrants through New York prior to 1892, but they did not come through Ellis Island. Just prior to Ellis Island, the immigration station was at Castle Garden in Manhattan.
I too am interested in the CD ROM of Ellis Island. Ellis Island started about 1892 so before that time the emigrant would not have arrived there. Before that time (starting about 1855, they arrived at Castle Garden. Grant DAvis
