Do you know you're a part of a great design As vast as eternity? Can you think for a moment how much depends On your holding the iron rod? Your life is forever, worlds without end. Do you know you're a child of God? Do you know where you've been, little child of mine? It is hard to recall I know. Do you ever remember that home divine With the Father who loves you so? Do you sometimes review how he took your hand And placed it within my own Saying, "Here is a child from angel land, Not a gift, but a precious loan." Do you know where you're going, child of mine? Are your eyes on the road ahead? Do the spires of his castle gleam and shine Where the sun grows golden red? Are you taking enough for your journey, child? Does your lamp cast a steady glow? Can you hold your course when the storm is wild? You will make it, my child, I know. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- SPIRIT Mailing List for LDS-oriented spiritual thoughts, items and stories For assistance, contact [email protected] http://seminary.org/spirit/
This is such a good reminder about family home evening =) --------------------- Forwarded message: From: [email protected] (Dave Crockett) Sender: [email protected] Reply-to: [email protected] To: [email protected] (lds-gems) Date: 97-08-21 14:07:39 EDT Topic: Family Home Evening Gordon B. Hinckley Our children deserve such a home in which to grow. I am not speaking of the architecture or the furnishings. I am speaking of the quality of our family life. I am grateful that we as a Church have as a basic part of our program the practice of a weekly family home evening. It is a significant thing that in these busy days thousands of families across the world are making an earnest effort to consecrate one evening a week to sing together, to instruct one another in the ways of the Lord, to kneel together in prayer, there to thank the Lord for his mercies and to invoke his blessings upon our lives, our homes, our labors, our land. I think we little estimate the vast good that will come of this program. I commend it to our people, and I commend it to every parent in the land and say that we stand ready to assist you who may not be of our faith. We shall be happy to send you suggestions and materials on how to conduct a weekly family home evening, and I do not hesitate to promise you that both you and your children will become increasingly grateful for the observance of this practice. It was John who declared: "I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth." (3 John 4.) This will be your blessing. (CR Oct 1965) ===================================================================== We ask that parents begin early to train their children. Where there is family prayer, where there are family home evenings, where there is scripture reading, where the father and mother are active in the Church and speak with enthusiasm concerning the Church and the gospel, the children in such homes become imbued in a natural way with a desire to teach the gospel to others. (Ensign, Oct 1987) ===================================================================== Again, are we holding family home evenings each week? Your immediate results may seem far from ideal at times, but by holding weekly family home evenings, as we have been counseled, we help to perfect that eternal family unit. (CR Apr 1988) ===================================================================== If you have any doubt about the virtue of family home evening, try it. Gather your children about you, teach them, bear testimony to them, read the scriptures together and have a good time together (Promontory Branch, Utah, Oct 15, 1995) ===================================================================== We advocate in the Church a program we call family home evening, reserving one night a week where father, mother and children sit down together and talk - talk about the family and about one another and study some together. (President Hinckley to President Bill Clinton, Nov 1995) ===================================================================== I hope, my brothers and sisters, that you are having your family home evenings with your children. You cannot afford to postpone this. The days, the months, and the years pass so quickly, and before long it will be too late. (Veracruz, Mexico, January 28, 1996) ===================================================================== We are trying to preserve the traditional family - father, mother, and children - working together in love toward a common goal. In large measure we are succeeding against great odds. We advocate a family home evening, for instance, one night a week reserved for family activity together. Lessons from the scriptures are taught. Family business is discussed. Vacations are planned. We sing together. We pray together. It works! (From media luncheon, Washington, D.C., Dec. 2, 1996) ===================================================================== You're trying to rear your children in truth and righteousness. You hold family home evening, and that's a wonderful thing. Isaiah said, "All thy children shall be taught of the Lord." And then he gives this promise of reward: "And great shall be the peace of thy children." (Isa. 54:13.) (Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, Fireside, Nov 1996) ------------------------------------------------------------------- Teachings of President Hinckley - You can receive this and other gems by subscribing to the LDS-GEMS mailing list. NOT ME. I LOVE MAIL. Last night we woke up and found our 13 year old still on the computer. It was 4:00 am. I told him 1 or 2 is ok, but 4:00. Anyway, my husband wants to know what time should a 13 year old go to bed in the summer? during school time? Suggestions please He is a hyper boy and has a hard time sleeping. Anyway I couldn't go back to sleep and was so excited to see mail at 4:30 in the morning. I stayed up for an hour and went back to bed. I had to get up by 7:00 to go to work. My hubby says I am a e-mail "olic" Can you believe that? I love mail. I only check mine maybe twice a day and get at the most 15 messages. Not too much for me. E-mail me any time. I LOVE MAIL. Can't by Edgar A. Guest Can't is the worst word that's written or spoken; Doing more harm than slander or lies; On it a strong spirit is broken, And with it many a good purpose dies. It springs from the lips of the thoughtless each morning And robs us of courage we need through the day; It rings in our ears like a timely sent warning, And laughs when we faulter and fall by the way. Can't is the father of feeble endeavor The parent of terror and half-hearted words, It weakens the efforts of artisans clever And makes of the toiler an indolent shirk; It poisons the soul of the man with vision. It stifles in infancy many a plan. It greets honest toiling with open derision, And mocks at the hopes and dreams of a man. Can't is a word none should speak without blushing. To utter it should be a symbol of shame. Ambition and courage it daily is crushing. It blights a man's purpose and shortens his aim. Hate it with hatred that's deep and undying, For once it is welcomed 'twil break any man. Whatever the goal you are seeking, Keep trying and answer this demon by saying "I can." ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- SPIRIT Mailing List for LDS-oriented spiritual thoughts, items and stories For assistance, contact [email protected] http://seminary.org/spirit/

Broken Dreams As children bring their broken toys With tears for us to mend, I brought my broken dreams to God Because He was my friend. But then instead of leaving Him In peace to work alone, I hung around and tried to help With ways that were my own. At last I snatched them back and cried, "How could you be so slow" "My child," He said, "What could I do? You never did let go." - Author Unknown
hi all this is in regards to cooking i hate it and i dont make bread eather but i sent out a few receipes that i do make and the kids love them love pam
I have come across a very simple meal, but yet good. There are times when I get tired of fixing meat all the times, and this dish always is great, and my family enjoys it too. Baked ZITI I jar of Spaghetti Sauce (your choice). I box of Ziti (they are round noodles and long like a pipe) Cook the noodles. Mix together. Add mozzarella cheese and bake. I usually just do it in the microwave for 10 to 15 minutes. This really is too easy!
Ok I have one or two. Very easy. I think so. I am a mom of a 4,2, and6 mo. so not much time to be spending in the kitchen. I love cooking, but find the easy ways of doing it. Like sometimes I go to the Farmer's Market and get my veggies. I clean them, chop them, and put them in freezer bags. This saves much more time during cooking. I am also lucky in one respect, my hubby is a baker and brings home bread everyday. He is a wonderful baker, when I need something to take somewhere I just ask and volia there it is. Lucky me!!! I also cook alot of things in the slow cooker(crock pot) this cuts down on a lot of time. So I go in and pull something from freezer or pantry. Also one other thing I like is, my in-laws gave my hubby and I a steam cooker. This thing is great, you never burn rice or run out of water on veggies. It has a timer and all. Sometimes I frustrate my hubby because I never really follow direction, and he is always amazed that mine turn out better because he always follows the directions. Just something to ponder. Use your own judgement. I got married and only knew how to bake cakes and goodies because thats what my mom would let me do, big eye opener to know that there are actually other things to cook.LOL Anyway here you go. Have a wonderful day!!! Chicken & Dumplins' 3 pounds of chicken(best to get boneless, much easier) 1/2 cup chopped onion pinch poutry seasoning pinch salt pinch pepper 2 cups sliced carrots 1 cup sliced celery flour Ok lets do simple. Boil the chicken for 20 min. Add onion, celery, carrots, and seasonings. If you don't like any of the veggies omit them, it does great without them. Boil everything for another 15 min. Add dumplins---flour and water, make it a thick paste. Drop in about 1 tablespoon of mix. This makes the dumplins'.Cook for another 15 min on low. Stir. Serve. If the ckicken broth is too thin, use flour to thicken up to a gravy. Hasbrown Stuff 2 lbs. hashbrowns (I use the storebrand version of Ore Ida hashbrown patties) thaw and crumble, 1 can cream of mushroom soup, 8 oz. sour cream, 1 chopped onion, 2 cups shredded chedder cheese. Salt and pepper to taste. Mix all ingredients. Press into casserole dish. Spread enough butter or margarine over the top to cover. Sprinkle with real bacon bits. Bake at 350 degrees for about an hour or until golden brown. I've used reduced fat sour cream and cream of mushroom soup...still tastes pretty good. Love, Mylinda [email protected]
sisters, I said I didnt have a calling other than being a visiting teacher. Last night I was called to see the bishop. I have been asked to work in the nursery. Well, I guess I have a calling now. I prayed on this and today called the bishop to say I would love to do it. I couldnt say anything before because I had to call my mother-in-law Momowood and let her know first. I feel really excited about this and hope I can be of some help. I joked with our bishop last night and asked how he found out I used to teach preschool. He said he didnt know that, but when he was praying on this my name kept coming to him. Deidre
You wrote that the kids cry when their father tells them to eat or go hungry and you feel bad, what should I do? First of all....let them cry; Secondly...stop feeling bad. When did you become a short order cook. These kids aren't going to be able to do this the rest of their lives--so they might as well change now. Let them choose what they want to eat from the food that you prepare.... Demand that they make NO negative comments on the food on the table. If they only want to eat the beans--let them eat beans only; if they only want to eat jello--let them eat jello only. They'll get tired of it eventually and the power struggle will end.
There is an excellent book suggested by the Church, "Teaching Your Child About Sex". It says you should begin "sex education" as soon as little children start noticing their genitals--a comment like, "that's what makes you a little boy (or girl)"... treating it as an ordinary, everyday thing. As my son got older and brought his girlfriend home to watch TV, sometimes I would catch them with the lights out necking. I just flip on the light and say, "that's your chastity light--and don't you forget it!" -- I used many of the suggestions in the book, also. Thankfully, when he got older he was "Temple Ready." Peg, I have been looking for the hawaiin haystacks recepie...thank you. MMM brownies too my hubbies favorite. I like to try new things. The reason I have grown to dislike cooking is my family is SO hard to please. My daughter who is 9 will eat no meat...it is about all my 7 year old son will eat and all it takes is for one is them to go ewe gross and then none of my 5 eat it. They are wonderful kids. I love then dearly. This is really the hardest part of being a Mom for me right now. Making something my whole family will like. I feel like such a failure when they say ewe gross. My DH AWAYS thanks me for dinner and the kids atleast have learned that. Every night I alway hear thanks for dinner Mom =) right before the ewe gross =) Thanks for sharing Love Cora P.S. Do any of you sister have any good ideas for kids who are picky eaters??? When you have 5 picky eaters there is never a meal that pleases everyone. This frusterates me SO much. My dh says eat or go hungry and they cry and I feel bad. What do I do?? They really are not spoiled brats or anything it is just hard to please them all at the same time.

Sisters, I come to you for a very big favor. My best friend is getting married. It was sort of a short notice wedding. I found out 2 weeks ago, and the wedding is on the 9/6. I want to show her how much I love her. I want to give her something that she will look at and say," What a wonderful gift, I will always treasure this." She means so much to me. She is not a member of the church, but her soon to be husband grew up in the church, although not active now. I want them to know that my husband and I love them so much and are very happy for them. If anyone of you could offer a suggested gift, I would appreciate it. I want it to be something very special, maybe something I make for her. When I got married she made me a fabric covered photo album, what should I do for her? I plead with you for a wonderful gift. I love all of you and hope all your days are wonderful!!!
