Hi all, It's a pleasure to join the group. It's so hard to research so far away from home but I'm sure that the tips that I pick up here will help. Without further adieu, here is my info: A. Scott Eric Fowler B. Naples Serviceman's Branch, Naples Italy District C. DOB 21 Jul D. FOWLER, ROBINSON, MORTLOCK, SCULL, POWELL, FORD, and DAVIS E. Sure, send me it all, I could use the help. Most of my lines have been worked on by others, I just need to verify their work. The great mystery are the Fowler's. My grandfather, Dick Fowler (1915-1965) came to Houston, Texas with his brother Sidney from somewhere in Oklahoma. The brothers married two sisters, Nellie Mae and Francis ROBINSON. I requested his death certificate which should give me some clue. I found him in the SSDI but would appreciate any current info on how to get his SSN records (request forms, web pages etc.). Thanks for your help, Scott

I'm in desperate need of help! How? read on or skip to bottom! 1985: mother-in-law (Mil) receives group sheets, family newsletter showing her lines to abt 1702 - does nothing 1991:Mil receives letter: 13 years of serious research has produced a book about her husband's Gen, 1-time pre-pub offer - does nothing 1995-96: Mil passes copies on to my husband ( Hub) - He does nothing-I slip everything into the photocopier, return the originals to his clutter pile, and put my copies in the back file. You know, the one waiting for "Round Tuits" to go on sale. 8/31/97: I am about 2 mos away from a deadline to finish a cont ed (CE) class, and Hub starts looking over my shoulder to see why I'm always at the computer. To humor him, I pull out his stuff to show him, and send off inquiries on his 2 lines - takes 5 minutes. 24 hrs later I receive e-mail from both sides: the book is being reprinted, his 2nd cuz-2 is e-mailing to talk about that, who-knows-what cuz on the other side with the web-site wants an interview of Mil, now 83, Hub starts asking about relationships to the e-mailers. Then, I input all the info we have, plus updates from the website, now I'm into several hours of work, and Hub can't wait to see his pedigree and group sheets coming out of my printer. Now he is talking fondly of vacationing in Lazdijai, Lithuania! I have been working on mine since 1975, (well, OK, career took off and interfered) and am stuck at grandpa on mom's side. As his girlfriend said to Nathan Detroit..I kehn't SHTAND it! Thank goodness Hub still has a job to keep him occupied during the week. Oh, did I mention Hub doesn't know the on-off button on the computer (OK, he learned DOS Word Perfect 5.1 about a year ago, nothing else) I want to send him off on weekends to have cozy taped chats with Mil, get the web-site guy satisfied and GET HUB OFF MY BACK (er, shoulder) so I can get back to MY homework project, now due in 6 weeks! Where you can help: I need an interview script, mine dates from 1975, and is not all that great. Any sources, books, etc. you can refer me to or one you can e-mail. Hi everyone, I have been meaning to talk to you a little bit about why we do genealogy research. Some do it to join a society like DAR etc (which are good societies). Some do it and are determined to document every word. Some do it as an obligation. Some do it to get a feeling of family. Some do it for love. You have to decide what you want from your genealogy. I write it so I can not only trace my roots but try to find out the personal things that made each ancestor unique. One of my favorite things to do is go to my home town and sit at the microfilm printer with old newspapers microfilmed and just click every time I see any of my surnames mentioned. A lot of it is who had dinner with who or visitors from out of town, new babies, deaths, (I accidently got two of my great grandmothers obits doing this) Its getting to know them-- who were they--what did they like to do-- were they happy and fun or sad and alone. You can learn all kinds of things if you look and want to. I was reaised in an extremely disfunctional home with no feeling of roots. I went to 16 grade schools in 8 years. (don't get me started LOL) By researching I am getting the feeling of belonging to a family, of knowing where I came from. That is my reason. I have found funny things like (well I thought it was) my dad had to have his tonsils out when he was in the navy. I never knew so many things. I love getting to know each ancestor as personally as I can so I feel I know them and they are my family. This is genealogy by my perspective. I will probably never be able to document a lot of things but knowing the family member means so very much more. I think this fits in to what you were asking Tanya. Enough of my rambling along - Happy Hunting, Dianne
Hi Everyone, I was asked by one of you to help know a good way to post a pedigree to a hopeful relative and how to read the ones with numbers and indentations. That is a toughie! The way I deal with sending my pedigree to a possible relative is to write it like this: Dianne Lynn Curry Morris parents- father- Anderson Rudolph Curry mother- Clara Juanita Boaz grandparents- George Benjamin Curry and Ella Amelia Schulte (married couple) Noah William Boaz and Ethel Lindhorst great grandparents-Anderson Curry and Elizabeth Ann Pruett Rudolph Schulte and Anna Eva Lotz Amos Wilson Boaz and Anna Bannon Robert T. Lindhorst and Sue Mae Chesser and it goes from there. You start with yourself and work back- filling in basic info- If they are a realtive then you can go in to dates, places etc. This may not be the best way but it works for me and I have all my direct line descendants listed that way. You can compare collateral lines (siblings (and spouses of) and the rest of the family. Now as to using the numbered Indented form of presenting your pedigree chart -I find it as confusing as you do usually. But this is how my pedigree would be that way (this way you start with the oldest relation you know and work forward) 1. Amos Wilson Boaz +Anna Bannon 2 their first child (second generation) +spouse if married 3 their child (third genertation) 3 their child (etc) +spouse 4 their child (fourth generation) +spouse 5 their child (fifth generation) 2 the original couples second child +spouse 3 their child +spouse 4 their child +spouse 5 their child 2 the original couples third child You can see how this could be confusing- especially if each child had several children who had several children etc, It could be pages between the originals couples children. I hope you understand this. I get confused just explaining it LOL. Some people add to the confusion by adding the alphabet to the list-A, a, roman numerals --whew- I am more into learning not only my genealogy but who the ancestors really were so usually put it in a text form that would probably confuse you to haha. ( If I have more information than just a name I put a + in front of the number of the person in the family.) # where child fits in( i for the first child ii for the second etc) name Oldest known faimly member. born XX at XX Died XX at XX buried at XX. Married (spouses name) date of marriage. She was born XX at XX Died XX at XX buried at XX (spouses parents goes here) They had the following children: +1 i son Joe 2 ii son Tom +3 iii daughter Sue SECOND GENERATION 1. son Joe was born XX at XX died XX at XX buried at XX. He married Jane Doe XXXXX at Blue co. IA. She was born xx at xx, died xxx at xx buried at xx (her parents were xx xx) They had the following children: 4. i mary ryan +5 ii ann ryan 6 iii linda ryan 7 iv george ryan 3. daughter sue was born xx at xx died xx at xx buried at xx. She married tom lewis. They had the following children: 9 i pat lewis +10 ii ann lewis FOURTH GENERATION 10. ann lewis was born(you fill in all the info you have). she married Joe___ They had the follwowing children: 11 i susie ___ Now that I have you totally confused (really I hope not) I will hush till next time. I would read these over and try a little of each and see what works for you. Have a good day! Dianne

Fellow LDS researchers: What's a good answer for our non-member friends and family when they ask, "Why are you interested in helping me with my research?" My answer was, "Just look around you at all the incomplete families you know, then look at all the complete families you know -- which produces, on a regular basis, a stable and more secure offspring with their feet on a firm foundation? I feel that by going deeper into my family history, I know that much more about "who I am" and "Where I come from" and this gives me a better foundation on which to build "where I'm going". By my posterity knowing who their progenitors were, they can't help but have their feet placed more firmly on the ground and this encourages them to continue to build stable and secure families, with a firm footing, who know who they are." I'm wondering if any of you have any additional suggestions. Please advise. Dianne! You are too good to be true! Thank you so much for the effort to establish this list and now for the extra effort just for me. My Myers, Copen, and Farley lines are from WV and my Rice line is from MD and WV. My husband's Dumont family were Washington, DC natives. Some Dumonts came from MA. Other family names are Lineberger, Norbeck, and Werner (last two from Eshzell, Germany). My real stumbling block is my paternal grandfather, James Francis Rice. No one in the family ever knew, but suspected, he was born out of wedlock in Cumberland, MD. No name for mother either so this Rice name could be his mother's maiden name. I do have his birthdate - 02 April 1865. I have not worked on these names ever over the internet so I am a real greenie. My family group sheets and pedigree charts go back to early 1800s. I received all your lessons but admit I need to read and digest them - and I will. +:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+ From Jane's brain For all the Saints +:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+

Dianne: Where do your Halls come from My Halls are From Kentucky. I have my great-grandfather Millard Fillmore Hall who married Veitrice Stenger in 1904.Millard is the son of Chaplain Hall (Chaplain may be a tiltle his real name may be Benjamin) Who is suppose to be the son of Sir Benjamin Hall of England. I have a wonderful chapter to a book my grandmother started that tells of her early life. She also mentions an uncle Herbert Hall who came to visit bringing a wife and baby girl with him The wifes name was Thelma. I am desperate to find Veitrice my grandmother mother who died when my grandmother was 6 yrs old. I've been feeling an overwhelming closeness to Vietrice and I know I have to find her though I've checked the vital statistic records in Ky and she's not there I'm thinking that maybe they were somewhere else and moved to Ky after her death I just don't know. My grandmother (Rosella has been in a coma for a week now) so that may be why I have such a strong need to find her mother so they can be reunited. Anyhow I'm actually collecting any and all info on all Halls so anything you would be willing to send would be great.

Hi Everyone, I have been checking sites to send you to and it made me realize I don't know anything (haha). There is just so much out there!!! A few basics for the Greenies: Start with yourself. Your pertinent information. Then your parents, sisters, brothers -grand parents- aunts uncles --and question all of them (kindly of course :-)) about other relatives and memories they have. You may find some thing invaluable later on. You work with the information you have and work backwards. parents grandparents great-grandparents etc. Even if you have very little information you can work this way. Always write down where you get any information at all so you can refer back if you need to. Write down dead ends too. That way you don't repeat yourself. If you do not have any Family Group Sheets (lists parents, children and etc) for each marriage, you need to get to work <G>. Any local Family History Center at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints will have FGS(family group sheets) and Pedigree Charts. Sometimes there is a nominal charge (5-10 cents usually). They are usually very nice volunteers that will help you if needed to learn how to fill out the forms. They are also very helpful --you do not have to be a member to use them. Check the white pages and call the church for hours. If you have a program in your computer for keeping your genealogy, most will print out these sheets, with the information you have accumulated or blank. If you don't have access let me know and I will send a few addresses off the net you can get free forms to print out on your printer. ALWAYS write down things, I can't stress this enough because I know what its like not to. I ended up backtracking a lot looking for the same information--a real time waster. There are so many places online to get how to information on genealogy, If you get tired of me rattling on how tos just let me know (I wouldn't mind that one being private :-)) OK - now everyone has their FGS and PC right! Fill out one with you as a child and as a spouse (if married). Then your parents. Be sure to include siblings and their spouses and children etc. A good location for how to's is at <A HREF="http://www.familytreemaker.com/how tofnd.html">Family Tree Maker's Genealogy Site: Getting ...</A> If this comes thru blue click it otherwise you can go to: http://www.familytreemaker.com/00000394.html The Family Tree Maker Genealogy site is good. They have a searchable index. Go to home page for a list of all things available. <A HREF="http://www.family treemaker.com/ifftop.html">Family Tree Maker's Genealogy Site </A>http://www.familytreemaker.com/index.html I hopes this helps. If there is a specific research area you want please post the question on the mailing list- [email protected] so when I answer (of course assuming I can LOL) everyone will get the information at the same time. They may have been wanting the same information but were afraid to ask ;-). I will hush up now. Happy Hunting, Dianne
