Greetings NY List: I need some guidance on how to find a "missing person"--he is (or was) my great-uncle, Edwin Boyd Van Vleck, born May 30, 1890, in Hannibal, Oswego Co., NY. Apparently he was somewhat of an adventurer or perhaps something worse! He seems to have left the Oswego area by the early 1920s, leaving behind a family that since scattered and is gone now. His only known son died at age 80 in 1995--before I discovered genealogy, unfortunately! My great-uncle kept in touch with my grandfather, Charles Van Vleck, but whatever they discussed has gone to the grave with my grandfather. I don't know of anyone who is alive who would be able to offer any clues as to where and when he died. One of my aunts insists that he moved "out west" -- possibly to Missouri -- and changed his name to Harold Johnson! A needle in the haystack? I've checked the Social Security Index and found nothing. I have a picture that I think is of him in a uniform -- my mother thinks perhaps he was in World War I. I've not checked that possibility yet. So, does anyone have any thoughts on how to find someone who must be dead by now and who probably didn't want to be found? Thanks so much! Writing to you from a muggy Austin, TX, Marilyn Hough Stern
