I subscribe to GEN-NYC-D-request@rootsweb.com for the digest mode. Second, when I lived in southern California,I found great NYC resources. The National Archives in Laguna Niguel; many of the Family History Centers had microfilms in their permanent holdings so I didn't have to order copies. I also used the state university for ILL --the Sutro library has great stuff! For a modest fee, I had full library privileges.
