Thank you to Nancy, Charles and others for their advice re 1892 NY census, in reponse to my query (copy below). I'm afraid US research is something I haven't had a lot of experience with - most of my links are Britih or Australian. If anyone CAN asist with an exact address look up in the 1992 census or slightly later ...as per my LENNON page at my Web site http://www.gidgenet.com.au/sknowles/surnames/Lennon.html the address details are: James & Mary LENNON 63 Bergen Street, New York They were definitely at this address in 1906. Many thanks Steven Knowles Home email: sknowles@gidgenet.com.au Offic mail: steven.knowles@bankwest.com.au - --------------------------------------------------- This is one of those examples (and I don't mean to single you out Steve, yours is just the most recent) where asking for a lookup, instead of advice, is not the way to go. So, this is for everyone who's new at this and wondering about what's available where in the 1890-92 time frame in the NYC area. First, there is no 1890 Police Census for Brooklyn. The 1890 Police Census was only taken in Manhattan (NY County) and parts of the Bronx, not any of the other Counties of current day NYC. Second, there is a 1892 State Census for Brooklyn that is what you would need to access. There is no such similar census for that year for Manhattan that is extant. But, there is an 1892 Census for Queens (which included Nassau County at the time). Third, both of these censuses are UNINDEXED. Just giving a name is useless. You need an exact address to make use of either of these censuses. Fourth, even if you do have an exact address for either of these censuses, the lookup is not as easy as you would imagine. It's a several step process that takes a good amount of time, patience, and exact figuring (by exact address) to be successful. It's not difficult once you get the hang of it, but if you're new to it, it can be a "hair puller." For the 1890 Police Census, several of the "books" are missing and the census is not complete. So, even when you determine which reel to look in, you have to determine whether the volume you are looking for even (still) exists. Many don't. Some repositories have this clearly marked on the boxes or in the finding aids, but not all. So, I hope I've helped here. Asking for a lookup in either of these two censuses is a lot to ask unless you know the person has a bit of experience with them and you have a very good, exact address for that particular year. Best regards. Nancy. PS: For those of you who are wondering "how do I get an exact address?" you have to use a combination of things. Some good sources are: 1) Vital Records - B, D & Marriage Certs usually have addresses. If you have ANYONE in the family group with such an event in this time period, it could be helpful. 2) City Directories 3) Burial/Cemetery records can lead you to death certificates. 4) The federal censuses for 1880 and 1900. If they didn't move, you probably have a good address. Back this up with Directory work. 5) Voter registration records, wills, deeds, etc. 6) Family memorabilia, bibles, letters, etc. NColeman ncroots@worldnet.att.net NYC/Long Island Family History Research Services: http://www.genealogyPro.com/ncoleman.html County Coordinator for the Nassau GenExchange: http://www.genexchange.com/ny/nassau/index.cfm Irish Family History Forum www.ifhf.org -----Original Message----- From: Steven.Knowles@bankwest.com.au <Steven.Knowles@bankwest.com.au> To: GEN-NYS-L@rootsweb.com <GEN-NYS-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Wednesday, October 27, 1999 12:45 AM Subject: LENNON - Brooklyn, NY - 1890 police census lookup? >I suspect that my wife's GG Grandparents James LENNON & Mary MURPHY were in >Brooklyn, New York in the late 1800s (if interested please see ><http://www.gidgenet.com.au/sknowles/surnames/Lennon.html> for more >detail). > >Would anyone out there have ready access to the NYC 1890 police census?
