Has anyone had experience with sending Freedom of Inf. form G-639 to get naturalization papers? I thought it would be a good idea to get my grandfather's and my husband's grgrandfather's, but find that the records one must accummulate in order to prove descent are rather daunting. Is it really true that you need the death cert. of the person you're inquiring abt and all the birth and marriage certs down the line to prove you really are descended from that person? What if you want ,say, an uncle's papers because your direct ancestor wasn't naturalized? I tried for my grandfather's through the NYC branch of NARA but he wasn't in the index. And my husband's grgrandfather was Nat. in Newburgh, NY, so the NYC NARA doesn't have him either. In my husband's line's case, I have a photocopy of his final papers, which give no info, but do provide a date. In my own case, I have only a ballpark estimate of the year. (He was PA on the 1920 census and died in 1929. An aunt has his final papers, but isn't forthcoming with the index # or date).
