I have been researching New Jersey marriage bonds and posting them to the NJ USGenWeb Archives site. I was surprised at the number of New York residents who married in NJ. As I complete a volume, I will post the NY ones to the mailing list. I'm new to the list, I hope that this is appropriate. NEW YORK CONNECTIONS IN NEW JERSEY MARRIAGE BONDS from microfilm copies of original marriage bonds in possession of NJ Dept. of Education, Division of State Library Archives & History, filmed in 1966. "Marriages are from various counties, and are arranged in groups by surname, but not alphabetical within groups." (Family History Library Catalog; 0888701-0888710) I have capitalized all surnames for ease in identification. When there was a discrepancy with a name in the body of the bond and the signature, the difference of the signature is in parentheses, There were two paragraphs in the document, the first is the bond, and the second is the marriage license, followed by signatures and seals of the bondsmen, and the signature(s) of witnesses to the bond. There are no notations as to when or where the actual marriage took place. An asteric * indicates spelling of a locality as found in document. The time frame covered by these bonds is generally 1735-1797 The cost of the bond and marriage license appears to have been about 1 pound, 4 shillings. The 500 pounds was the amount that the bondsmen were indebted to the government in the event that there was a claim of fraud against one of the parties being married.
