Oneonta is a City and its surrounding Town in Otsego County NY, quite far removed from NY City. Rather than attempt the shotgun approach with cemeteries, you'll be better off getting a copy of her death certificate, which will list the cemetery and undertaker. If the latter is still in business, you may get some good information there. You can get the death certificate from the NY State Dept of Health; see: http://www.health.state.ny.us/nysdoh/consumer/vr/geninst.htm They are unfortunately not known for their speed - mail requests usually take many months for a response. The NY State death index is available in only two locations, Albany and New York City, but if you can get a volunteer or researcher to determine the date of death and exact locality from the index, you can also get the death record from the local City or Town Clerk, as the case may be. The NY State Archives has an index lookup service, which used to be pretty prompt. But I understand from some postings they are now not much quicker than the NYSDOH. Does anyone have any recent experience with them? For the Archives, see: http://unix6.nysed.gov/holding/fact/vital-frm.htm "Ken Campbell" <ken@iform.com.au> wrote: >Hi All. > >I have just received a copy of a letter written in 1888 from Francis HELM of >4 Spring St, Oneonta, New York to his brother Charles in Sydney Australia, >and have some questions that I hope someone can answer for me, please. > >Is Oneonta a suburb of New York city or a town/city in New York state? > >Francis's wife was Rose B HELM nee POND, Rose is reported to have died abt >1935 in Oneonta.
