    1. Questions about Corlis HINDS, NY State Assemblyman (Republican) 1809 - 1812
    2. Gord Hines [SK]
    3. My questions: 1. What geographic area of NY did Corlis HINDS represent in 1809 & 1811? 2. Where did he live prior to and after the time of his office? 3. Where/When was Corlis HINDS born? died? Any info of his parents? 4. What was his profession or occupation before taking office? 5. Were elections held in both 1809 and 1811? or did Corlis succeed someone else mid-term, like he himself was succeeded in Feb. 1812? Was mid-term succession by appointmemt or in a by-election in this time period. 6. Why and when did Corlis HINDS leave office? ========================================= My research into Corlis HINDS has yielded up the information below: (sources cited below were obtained by another researcher and not by me -- so please do not ask me about anything these sources -- they are provided in the hope that they might assist someone who reads this email request and has access to these or other policical resources that might answer my questions). <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> Corlis HINDS served in the N.Y. State Assembly as a Republican. He voted in favor of banks, when he did not abstain, 71% of the time. source: Journal of the N.Y. Assembly. He served in 1809 and 1811, but he was succeeded for reasons unknown on 4 Feb. 1812 by William Hunter, a Federalist. source: S.C. Hutchins, "Civil List and Forms of Government of the Colony and State of New York" (Albany: 1869). <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> My genealogical research into the HINDS family of early Jefferson County, NY has identified two Corlis HINDS -- either of which could be the aforementioned Republican Assemblyman. Answers to the questions above should enable me to correctly identify "who is who". My first choice for the Assemblyman would be: Corlis HINDS born 22 Jun 1774 Barre, Worcester, MA married in 1795 in Mt Holly, Rutland Co, VT to Polly BENT born: 1778 in Mt Holly, Rutland Co, VT died: 31 Aug 1859 in Newark, Licking Co, OH They had the following children: 1. Alpheus Hardin HINDS b: 09 Mar 1796 in Mt Holly, Rutland Co, VT married 01 Jan 1818 in Watertown, Jefferson Co, NY to Mercy WILKIE b: 10 Sep 1797 in Watertown, Jefferson Co, NY 2. Betsey HINDS b: 03 Mar 1798 in Mt Holly, Rutland, VT married 27 Mar 1817 in Watertown, Jefferson Co, NY to Larned (Learned?) Sampson FOSTER b: 1794 in Bradford, PA 3. Patty HINDS b: 01 Jan 1800 in Mt Holly, Rutland Co, VT married 25 Dec 1817 in Watertown, Jefferson Co, NY to Eliphalet Morgan HOWARD b: 02 Mar 1794 in Lynne, CT 4. Susan HINDS b: Abt 1802 in Mt Holly, Rutland Co, VT 5. Corlis HINDS b: 01 Dec 1803 in Watertown, Jefferson Co, NY [birth also found as Mt Holly, Rutland Co,VT] 6. Sophrona HINDS b: 1805 in Watertown, Jefferson Co, NY My second choice is the father of the above Corlis HINDS (b 1774): namely: Corlis HINDS b 10 Apr 1748 Brookfield, Worcester, MA d 1832 Petersham, Worcester, MA married (2nd wife) in 1772 Barre, Worcester, MA, to Susannah HENRY b abt 1748 Brookfield, Worcester, MA Corlis b 1748 was still living in Barre MA in 1789/90, when his last child was born (Susannah HINDS). I have no further record of him until his death in 1832 at the home of his first son Samuel, in MA. Corlis HINDS b 1774 was one of seven sons of Corlis HINDS b1748 MA, who in turn was one of 5 sons of Corliss HINDS b1724 MA. Descendants of these HINDS lines first migrated predominantly to VT, NY (incl. Jefferson, Lewis, Oswego and other counties), NH and ME. SUMMARY & COMMENTS: Corlis HINDS, b1774 MA, arrived in Watertown, Jefferson Co, NY from Mt. Holly, Rutland Co, VT, about 1802-1803 and appears to be present in Watertown until about 1815. Three of his children marry in Watertown - two in 1817 and one in 1818. One son, Corlis HINDS b1803, marries in Watertown in 1830. However, there appears to be no evidence of Corlis HINDS b 1774, in Oneida Co and Jefferson Co NY federal census records from 1810-1840. There are census records of "Carlos HINDS" and "Curtis HINDS" but their age profiles do not match up. Why does Corlis HINDS b1774 not appear in the 1810, 1820, 1830 or 1840 Jefferson Co NY census? Did he temporarily move, just at census time, to VT or MA where his siblings, parents and many cousins still lived - or did he "hide out" from the census takers for some reason? Could his children who married in 1817-1818 in Watertown have lived with relatives or future in-laws there and not their parents? After Corlis HINDS b1774 arrived in Jefferson Co, NY, between 1802-1803, his brothers Thomas HINDS b1780, Joseph Buckminster HINDS b 1787 and possibly Jonas HINDS b1783, also relocated to Jefferson Co. Thomas was in Jefferson Co as early as Feb 1813, Joseph as early as March 1814 and Jonas circa May 1835 (each relocation is based on a child born in Jefferson Co). Did the brothers move to Jefferson Co following the footsteps of their father Corlis b 1748 -- if he was the first Corlis HINDS in Jefferson Co??? or did they follow their older brother Corlis b 1774??? As one final observation, one of the Jefferson Co websites identifies a "Corlis HINDS" who appears in the list of "EARLY SETTLERS" of Jefferson County. This list can be viewed at the Jefferson Co GenWeb page: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyjeffer/earlsett.htm [They define an "Early Settler" as the head of a household living in Jefferson County before 1850.] Unfortunatley there is no other information about this "Corlis HINDS" that would fuher assist in identifying him. Any and all assistance in answering the questions at the top of this email would be appreciated.// Gord HINES (in Regina SK Canada) emails: ghines@sk.sympatico.ca OR ghines@bigfoot.com
