However all along the way some people forget that this resource is here. I am sending this on "again" to the whole list too. Actually I do like to help out in your searches so I would like to remind people that rootsweb.com has all our messges to the list archived and they are available. If I refer to your future questions with a simple refer to the archives would you think of me as a terrible person trying to make someone think for themselves? So this following is one way of connecting with others who may be looking into a specific name rather than a general surname. I snipped and pasted to give this to you however all you need is there even if it reads a little strange. <SNIP>another resource for locating cemeteries and the graves in them is: "NColeman", ncroots@worldnet.att.net. – Second Comment on Cemeteries New York is an explanation in general of this subject. Nancy Coleman wrote: I keep seeing requests for phone numbers and addresses for New York City cemeteries. All NYC and Long Island cemeteries are online in a Cemetery Directory on the GenExchange: www.genexchange.com/NY/index.cfm Here is how to get to where you want to go on this URL: 1. At the top of the page, click on "Directories”. 2. At the next page, click on "Cemeteries”. 3. At the Cemetery Directory page, select the county you are interested in (Kings, Queens, Nassau, Suffolk or any other). 4. Click on "submit”. All of the cemeteries in that county will come up on your screen. Scroll down. 5. When you find the cemetery you are interested in, click on it. All of the details of that cemetery will come up on your screen. If you aren't sure where a cemetery is located, but you know its name, type in its name (without a county selected) and it should come up. If you aren't familiar with NYC geography, I suggest you browse both the Queens County and Kings County cemeteries to find what you are looking for. In addition to the aforementioned directory (and many others), there is a Burial Index. 1. At the top of the page, click on "Searchable Databases”. 2. Scroll down and click on "Burial/Cemetery Index”. 3. Scroll down and type in the surname you are looking for. Also, if the name is common, select a county. 4. All the burials that have been entered to date for that surname will come up. If you don't find a burial for your particular surname it is probably because the data hasn't been entered yet. This is a volunteer effort. The large, commercial, cemeteries have entries only by those who know that their loved ones are buried there. Some of the older, more historic cemeteries on Long Island have been entered in their entirety based on site visits, historical documents, historical/prior inventories, family papers/deeds, etc. This is an ongoing project with many dedicated volunteers who are, themselves, historians, teachers, or professional genealogists. All sources and LDS numbers, if available, are cited. In addition to the Cemetery Directory and the Burial the GenExchange has many other databases that are being worked on continuously: 1. Emigrant Savings Bank Records 2. US Census Records 3. Births 4. Baptisms 5. Death Records 6. Obituaries 7. Church Records 8. Yearbooks 9. Civil War Regiments 10. Historical Accounts/Biographies Signed Best regards.
