Barker, is available recorded on Compact Disk (CD) for IBM-compatible PC and Apple Macintosh home computers. The book on CD contains separate genealogy sections for the upstate New York counties of Herkimer, Montgomery, and Schoharie. Each county section has its own introduction, contents file, and set of family genealogies. In all, some 324 primary families are covered, plus there is a separate section for other individuals within each county. The CD files, which are meant to be read by the user's word processing software, are in Microsoft's Rich Text Format. These CD files have the ".RTF" extension and can be read by Microsoft Works, Microsoft Word, and most other word processors. At present (February 1999) the book on CD is the equivalent of about 1,748 pages typewritten. No paper printout is supplied with the CD; it being left to the user to print desired portions for themselves. Those desiring a hardcover (paper) edition of the author's book "Early Families of Herkimer County, New York", which contains essentially the same Herkimer County genealogies as the CD, plus illustrations and extra appendix material, should contact Genealogical Publishing Company of Baltimore, Maryland ("www.genealogical.com"). The author expects to add results from ongoing research to this book. In the future, it is expected that a revised version will be offered to CD purchasers (at an upgrade price).
