If you're asking about vital record indexes, they're maintained on microfiche and organized alphabetically by year. (On separate sets for births, marriages, and deaths.) Searching them is usually pretty quick, even over a span of years. If you run out of time in Albany, the National Archives Regional Branch in Manhattan, corner of Varick and Houston streets, has another set of the same microfiche indexes as the NYS Archives in Albany.
