    3. Hi Sarah, New York State has an index to their vital records starting at about 1878. That's the good news. The bad news is that they only have this index at the State Archives at Albany and at the New York Public Library, NYC, as far as I have been able to determine. This index is on microfische, and one could hire a genealogist or researcher to search for a person or persons. The New York State Library or the Albany area Genealogical Society could probably provide you with the name of a genealogist who would be willing to search, for a fee. Of course if you are within traveling distance to either NYC or Albany, you can do the search for yourself. David is right on the earlier vital records, that they are held locally, but also that most of them are only church records. However, many of these have been compiled into books and many others are filmed by the LDS and are available at Family History Centers. Best of Luck, Regards, Ginny [email protected] ----- Original Message ----- From: "davidandcarole" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, October 04, 2002 10:05 AM Subject: Re: HUGHTO/HURTEAUetc-OWENS, KING > Sarah, > > New York State usually keeps such records on the Local Level.
