    3. The Marriage license is what you get and give to who ever marries you........The certificate of marriage is what you get from the Town Clerk......................... Actually, I still have the notice from the Town Clerk from the Town of Cortlandville.....It says....... Enclosed is your marriage certificate on the form provided by New York State. This certified copy of your marriage record is to be used for legal purposes such as change of name for payroll records, social security, etc. If another copy is ever needed, you must obtain it from the issuing clerk, not whomever married you. Hope that explains it.........
