Hi fellow NY family historians. This is an announcement of my new website, which has been under construction for months. It is a compilation of the family data in the county history entitled "History and Directory of Yates County, New York," by Stafford C. Cleveland, published in 1873 at Penn Yan, NY. I extracted the names of all the families and put them into a genealogical software program and then extracted a GEDCOM file from it. I then converted the GEDCOM file into HTML files for placement on the internet. Many years after I started working on the index to this history I learned that not only were my father's earliest known family ancestors residents of Yates Co., NY, but also it turns out I am distantly related to a number of the other early families through my mother's side of the family, and so because I think this history is an invaluable (and rare) genealogical resource, I decided to share the family data online. If you have relatives who lived in Yates County, New York or the adjoining counties, such as Steuben, Seneca, Livingston, or Ontario counties, or individuals who came from New York to Michigan, or other Midwestern states, such as Illinois, Indiana, or Ohio, you might want to have a look at my site. Thus far only 33% of the files are online, because I'm going through each of the HTML files to proofread it to make sure the entries are accurate and to ensure that the links work properly. When finished, there will be 19,082 individuals on this site, and over 6,500 families, so this means there are now in excess of 2,100 family files online now. This is NOT a transcript of the entire history, although over the years I have occasionally made transcripts of various portions of it to post to message boards and online archives, and when I have remembered, I have links to those extracts in the relevant notes. I have entered notes as to where the families originated if it is mentioned in the history and also where the families moved to when they left Yates County, if that is also recorded, but I did not enter much in the way of biographical information, such personal idiosyncrasies or membership in fraternal organizations or churches to any great degree. This was meant to be a research tool, not an end in itself. Please read the introduction on the first index page, since I put some relevant information as to what you will see when you access the HTML files and also links to where you might find additional information on these families.
