I have a death certificate that on the line where the Dr. is supposed to sign the M.D. is crossed off & D.O. is written in what is D.O. an abbreviation for? Was this person signing not a medical person? Thank you Laurie
Laurie, This is an abbreviation for Doctor of Osteopathy. D.O.'s are admitted to practive in hospitals, and can have similar specialties as M.D.s; i.e., internist, surgeon, etc. My personal physician is a D.O. Hope this helps. I've been told that it's more common in the mid-West than the east coast. A person where I work- drug counseling agency- has the degree. Basically the same thing with a few very slight differences. They have a medical license, can dispense medicine, practice medicine etc. exactly like a M.D. -- Nancy Ward Liverpool, NY [email protected]
